Profession
Specialist doctor, Anaesthesia
Grade
Fellow
Hours
Full Time

We believe this is the first anaesthetic fellowship focused on GIRFT to be offered nationally. The Fellowship is aimed at senior trainees who are in possession of the FRCA (or equivalent) or CCT holders seeking further experience in leadership and management skills within the NHS. The post is for 12 months commencing August 2024. Candidates must have previous experience of working as an anaesthetist in UK in addition to full GMC registration.

GIRFT emphasise the need for clinical leadership to drive changes within the NHS to improve patient care. During the elective recovery programme, centres which have succeeded have consistently relied on strong leadership from their clinicians. Anaesthetists are well suited to managerial and leadership roles within elective surgical services due to their insight into peri-operative service requirements. However, there is a lack of opportunity nationally for anaesthetic trainees to gain dedicated training and 'hands-on' learning experience in managerial and leadership roles.

Main duties of the job

Specific Objectives

0-3 months

  • Establish an understanding of Trust structure, roles and responsibilities by shadowing senior managers and clinical leaders within the directorate and attending key meetings e.g. theatre management group, Heatherwood Board, elective steering group etc
  • Plan to complete a management/leadership course within first 4 months of fellowship
  • Gain knowledge of the principles of GIRFT to improve patient care efficiently by self-directed learning accessing reading materials and webinars available on the Future NHS website
  • Understand how shared learning is being utilised by the NHS to rapidly and efficiently implement changes in clinical practice
  • Appreciate the power of data to drive changes within healthcare including the implications of coding and data validation by clinicians. Show awareness of some of the national data reporting systems for anaesthetic and surgical specialities.
  • Register for Model Hospital and attend one of their webinars to understand how to use this system to analyse Trust/system level data and benchmark local practice at both national and regional levels
  • Gain awareness of how data is handled within NHS organisations in terms of accurate capture, extraction from electronic patient record systems and interpretation.
