This post is for a Locum Consultant in Acute Medicine to join a dynamic Acute Medical Unit (AMU). This is a 10 PA post, offering an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated physician to join an award winning, forward thinking, education oriented, dynamic and multi-professional team. The post will enable the AMU to continue to enhance its early management of emergency medical admissions by strengthening arrangements for the assessment and early management of medical emergencies across the Emergency Department (ED) and AMU, managing medical patients in the early part of their hospital stay including via large embedded Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) area and an Enhanced Care area. They will also make a vital contribution to teaching and training in acute medicine. The post holder will also contribute to the out of hours General Internal Medicine Physician of the Day (PoD) rota with a 3% on call supplement.

Applicants are required to be fully registered with the General Medical Council by time of appointment.

Main duties of the job

Key tasks:

  • To join the existing Acute Medical Consultants in providing a comprehensive and timely assessment of patients presenting to the Acute Medical Unit (AMU), including Same Day Emergency and Enhanced Care
  • To contribute to ED outreach work
  • To contribute to AMU Outpatient work
  • To participate in teaching and training of junior staff, medical students, and Advanced Nurse / Clinical Practitioners and Pharmacists based on the AMU
  • To participate actively in both Departmental and Trust Clinical Governance and Audit
  • To fulfil obligations relating to continuing medical education and professional development, appraisal and revalidation

Job responsibilities

  • To observe the provisions of and adhere to all Trust policies and procedures.

  • To attend Trust Statutory and Mandatory training sessions as required and any other training courses relevant to the post.
  • To fully comply with the relevant sections of the Health and Safety at Work Act. The post holder must also understand and implement Mersey and West Lancashire Hospitals NHS Hospitals Trusts Statement of Policy on Health and Safety at Work and the Trusts corporate Health and Safety Policies and Procedures. The post holder is required to follow all applicable rules and procedures relating to Health and Safety at Work and to take all responsible precautions.
  • To be aware of the confidential aspects of the post. To keep up to date with the requirements of information governance undertake mandatory training and follow Trust policies and procedures to ensure that trust information is dealt with legally, securely, efficiently and effectively. Breaches of confidentiality will result in disciplinary action that may involve dismissal. You must maintain the confidentiality of information about service user staff and organisational business in accordance with the General Data Protection Regulation 2018 (GDPR) and Caldicott principles
  • To ensure that when creating, managing and sharing information records, it is done in an appropriate way, subject to statutory requirements and agreed security and confidentiality policies, procedures and guidelines. Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential

  • Applicants must hold full registration with the GMC at the time of appointment
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • MRCP or equivalent medical qualification
  • Valid Advanced Life Support (ALS) Provider Status (as applicable)

Desirable

  • Specialty Certificate Examination in Acute Medicine
  • An appropriate higher degree (e.g. MD/PHD) or equivalent medical qualification

Knowledge & Experience
Essential

  • Demonstrate excellent communication with patients and colleagues
  • Appropriate knowledge base and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems.
  • Demonstrates the necessary range, depth and breadth of competencies specified in the Acute Medicine curriculum and applying to this post.
  • Demonstrates ability to undertake robust audit and/or research within team structure
  • Evidence of appropriate teaching experience

Desirable

  • Evidence of relevant academic achievements, e.g. degrees, awards
  • Evidence of relevant research e.g. presentations, publications in peer reviewed journals.
