Consultant Cellular Pathologist

This is a replacement post within the Department of Cellular Pathology in the Clinical Support and Imaging Clinical Management Group (CMG). The post is based at the Leicester Royal Infirmary.

The appointment will be whole time (10 PA) and it is anticipated that the appointed person will primarily support the skin team along with other specialities, likely lymphoreticular, GI or non gynae cytology subject to service requirement and discussion and agreement. Any consultant who is unable for personal reasons to work whole time will be eligible to be considered for the post. If such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis with the Trust in consultation with consultant colleagues.

Main duties of the job

Applications are invited for a Consultant Cellular Pathologist to join our committed and enthusiastic team in supporting the Cellular Pathology department in Leicester. The position will be primarily based at the Leicester Royal Infirmary site, but with the possibility of travel to theGlenfield Hospital or Leicester General Hospital for some duties. It is expected that the appointment will be covering dermatopathology, with other specialties included in the role being subject to service requirement, discussion and agreement.

You are expected to participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching (including supervision, training, assessment and appraisal of specialist registrars and biomedical scientists), clinical audit, research and development. You will work within a multidisciplinary team and may also be required to undertake management duties.

Membership of the Royal College of Pathologists and full GMC registration with a licence to practice is a requirement of the role.

As this post is regulated by the Protection of Children Act 1999, The Criminal Justice Courts Act 2000 and / or the Care Standards Act 2000, an enhanced Disclosure & Barring Scheme check will be requested by the Trust in the event of a successful application.

Job responsibilities

Outline Job Plan

Laboratory work (to include cutup, reporting, frozen section cover) both personally and in supervision of trainees. Clinical administration. Clinical meetings including multidisciplinary and other meetings.


Research, CPD, Audit and Clinical Governance, mandatory training, appraisal and job planning, administration, undergraduate and postgraduate teaching*.



10 PAs

On average, pathologists attend one MDT per week and it is possible other specialty MDTs will require attendance in the same week. Prep time and time spent attending MDTs is included in DCC activities in the job plan.

The job plan will be reviewed and a performance review carried out by the Head of service and, through them, the Medical Director of the Trust.

UHL recognises that all consultants require time to maintain and develop professional expertise but that additional supporting activities such as educational supervision, teaching and management may not be evenly distributed within a department.
