+/- A MEDICAL SPECIALITY (10 PAs available)

Opportunity to join a diverse team of 12 Acute Physicians (6.5 WTE) serving the Acute Medical Unit of one of Scotland’s major teaching hospitals.

NHS Tayside has long been at the forefront of innovating and efficient Unscheduled care.  The delivery of safe and effective care is achieved by a collaborative approach to managing unscheduled demand across acute services, our 3 Health & Social Care Partnerships, Primary Care and partner agencies such as NHS 24 and Scottish Ambulance Service.  NHS Tayside’s Unscheduled Care Board has representatives from all key areas and services and acts as a forum for learning, discussion and the identification of a joint vision and a shared set of priorities.

The Acute Medical Unit (AMU) comprises of 30 acute medical receiving beds, an Ambulatory Assessment Area (AAA) and a 16 bedded short stay medicine ward. The unit receives between 1200 and 1600 patient referrals per month, 70% directly from the community, and works collaboratively with multi-disciplinary teams to deliver high quality urgent assessment and care for unselected acute medical admissions.

Specialty consultant twice daily in-reach supports early assessment and senior decision making, reduces duplication and gives patients early access to the specialty care that they need. This collaborative model has proved a great success, creating a shared ownership, and better management of capacity and flow in unscheduled medical care.

The primary function of AMU is to “assess to admit”. The philosophy of assessment rather than admission ensures appropriate use of capacity and ensures patients receive the Right Care in the Right Place. This is enhanced by the use of a successful Prof to Prof advice and admission line. Through transformation AMU is achieving a discharge rate of 70% in 72 hours and allowing the Medicine Division to function at 85-90% capacity. AMU continues to evolve its front door pathway, particular in light of the pandemic, and consider new and innovative ways to deliver Unscheduled Care.

This post aims to enhance and develop the close relationship between the acute and general medical teams with major medical specialties as part of our medical receiving model. The post holder will contribute to evening and weekend working as well as overnight on-call. All other specialities will be considered and we welcome discussions with colleagues regarding new combinations of specialities.

In addition, the successful applicants will be expected to take part in postgraduate training and education along with opportunities to collaborate in research, and quality improvement.

Candidates should possess MRCP and be on the GMC Specialist Register in General Internal Medicine or be within 6 months of the anticipated award of CCT or CESR (CP) at the time of interview for the post. Less than full time applications will be considered.

Informal enquiries are welcome by contacting
