Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust was established on 1st December 2007. The Trust gained Teaching Hospital status and became Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in 2010. In April 2012 the Trust merged with community health services from NHS Blackpool and NHS North Lancashire as part of the Transformation of Patient Pathways Programme. We are now a Vanguard site with Extensive Care Services provided for the complex elderly population within Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre.

Person Specification
Qualifications and Training

  • MB ChB or equivalent
  • MRCP or equivalent
  • Inclusion on the Specialist Register or eligible for inclusion within 6 months of interview date
  • Full registration with the GMC
  • ALS


  • Higher degree (MD/PhD)
  • Membership of the Society of Acute Medicine


  • Ability to organise and prioritse workload and motivate the department as a leader
  • Possess good organisational skills.
  • Possess good verbal and written communication skills and leadership qualities
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office packages
  • Ability to work part of a multi-professional team
  • Evidence of ability to analyse and diagnose situations, prioritise and act accordingly


  • Computer and IT skills
  • Educational qualification or working towards.
  • Evidence of management training
  • Experience of service improvements

Management Skills

  • Awareness of NHS organisation and core values of NHS
  • Understanding of the management responsibilities of NHS consultants
  • Participation in a management training course

Knowledge and Research

  • Evidence of clinical presentation, understands the need for and appreciates the role of audit in clinical practice.


  • Participation in audit and research


  • Ability to undertake workload required


  • Ability to take independent responsibility for the management of all presentations to the service
  • Evidence of teaching others
  • Commitment to continue medical education and professional developments
  • Understanding of NHS management structures and principles of Clinical Governance for the Trust and Acute Medicine Department


  • Previous experience of working in the NHS or experience of NHS working practices and systems
  • Understanding of the CQC requirements in relation to Clinical Governance


  • Enthusiasm and commitment to the speciality
