Job Details

Applications are invited for a post of Consultant Cardiologist in Cardiac Magnetic Resonance based at St George's Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in the Cardiology Department. The consultant is expected to work with the Cardiac Magnetic Resonance team at St Georges performing Cardiac Magnetic Resonance on a Philips 3T Achieva scanner and a Siemens 1.5T Aera scanner. There is a weekly Cardiac Magnetic Resonance/Heart Failure MDT for complex case review. The post holder will join Dr Bunce, Dr Anderson, Dr Shanmugam, Dr Ray, Dr Marciniak and Professor Papadakis in the Cardiac Magnetic Resonance consultant team.

Main duties of the job

Cardiac Magnetic Resonance allows the assessment of anatomy, function, and viability of the heart. It can also detect ischaemia & infarction, assess congenital heart disease, the aetiology of heart failure, heart valve dysfunction and the presence of inherited diseases. Cardiac Magnetic Resonance is the gold standard test for many conditions and has an extensive and growing evidence base. It is safe (non-invasive, using no ionising radiation), accurate, provides prognostic evidence, changes patient management and reduces the need for other tests. Cardiac Magnetic Resonance is supported by European and US consensus panel reports and is considered appropriate for the majority of indications - particularly for complex patient presentations where clinical suspicion is high.

A key responsibility of this role is to contribute to continued development of Cardiac Magnetic Resonance services at St George's Hospital and SW London, with the extension of the service to 7-day working. The post-holder would be expected support Cardiac Magnetic Resonance research and clinical trials. We will also be looking for dedication to teaching of Cardiology trainees and Radiographers.
