The Royal London in Whitechapel is a major teaching hospital providing local and specialist services in state-of-the-art facilities. The London Hospital was granted Royal title by HM Queen Elizabeth II in 1990 to celebrate the 250th anniversary of its opening on the Whitechapel site, allowing it to be known as The Royal London Hospital. The Royal London Hospital is the UK's largest trauma centre and leads the trauma network for Northeast London and Essex. The hospital was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 2013. It is 17 storey, 727 bed hospital with a helipad for London's Air Ambulance and 44 bed adult critical care unit is a leading specialist centre with an international reputation for caring for critically injured trauma patients across London. In addition, the Royal London is home to London's busiest paediatric A& E department and one of the largest children's hospitals in the UK. The contemporary buildings reflect the innovation inside and the staff are, quite rightly, extremely proud to work in such an exciting and dynamic environment.

Main duties of the job

The post has a record of being a postgraduate approved training post and educationally sound. It provides excellent opportunities for gaining experience in microvascular surgery specifically free-tissue transfer with a sub-specialist interest in upper and lower limb reconstruction following trauma and oncological resections for breast and head & neck malignancies.

Person Specification
Qualification & Registration
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • ATLS
  • Maintain Full registration with the GMC, with a licence to practice.
  • FRCSPlas/Within 1 year of CCT
  • Post CCT
  • Higher academic qualification (e.g. MD or MS)
Training & Experience
  • Recent experience and familiarity of UK hospital systems and practices (or equivalent).
  • Minimum of 7 years postgraduate plastic surgery experience at registrar level equivalent to UK standards
  • Training in diagnosis and treatment of complex reconstruction conditions
  • Training in hand surgery to the level of independent operating
  • Fellowship in Microsurgery
  • Fellowship in Hand Surgery
Further Training, Management, Audit
  • Evidence of recent CME/ reasonable training progression at this stage of career.
  • Experience in relevant audit project and write up
  • An interest in quality improvement
Research, Teaching, Publications
  • Proven teaching ability.
  • Demonstrable willingness to undertake further research.
  • Proven track record in relevant research
  • Evidence of relevant publications in peer reviewed journals.
Personal Requirements (eg. Communication Leadership Skills, Flexibility)
  • Ability to deal with busy multidisciplinary workloads in a major teaching hospital.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Evidence of the ability to communicate with patients colleagues and staff at all levels
  • Ability to lead a team and form effective working relationships within the MDT team and build broad networks across the Trust.
  • Ability to inspire, motivate and develop junior medical staff.
