CAMHS Specialty Doctor - National & Specialist DBT Team - 4PAs - Fixed Term/18 Months
We are delighted to invite applications for an exciting part-time, Speciality Doctor post in the National & Specialist DBT team. This will be a Fixed Term post for 18 months.
The DBT team is situated within the CAMHS Clinical Academic Group of South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, the most comprehensive mental health service for children and young people in the country.
This post would be suitable for a wide range of psychiatrists, especially those with a background in community CAMHS, Liaison psychiatry or other crisis teams. In addition to extensive opportunities to develop clinical knowledge, experience and skills in managing child and adolescent self-harm, there are also excellent opportunities for quality improvement activities, research, teaching and training.
The National & Specialist CAMHS Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) Service is a well-established and supportive team based at the Michael Rutter Centre, Maudsley Hospital. The multi-disciplinary service consists of Clinical and Counselling Psychologists, a Senior Systemic Psychotherapist, an Occupational Therapist, a Clinical Nurse Specialist, a Consultant Psychiatrist and an Assistant Psychologist. The service accepts referrals within South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, Greater London Boroughs and Nationally.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will have the following key areas of responsibility:
- Assessments and therapeutic work with children, adolescents, and parents
- Undertake physical examinations and order investigations as required
- Prescribe and monitor psychotropic medication
- Co-work with and consult to other colleagues within the team
Working for your organisation
As a service we offer an intensive psychological assessment and treatment programme, including weekly skills groups for adolescents and parents/carers. Young people aged 13-17 years, with a history of self-harm and suicidal behaviour and difficulties with emotion regulation are eligible for the programme. The service also offers trauma-focused interventions where needed for those who are able to complete the first stage of DBT and we regularly treat young people with other clinical comorbidities.
DBT is a NICE guideline recommended evidence-based therapy. DBT has been shown to be effective with clients with self-harm and suicidal behaviours and symptoms associated with emotion dysregulation. The treatment targets self-harm behaviours and other high risk behaviours and helps people to manage their emotions, improve their relationships with others and to cope with difficult thoughts and feelings. This post will be primarily to provide psychiatric and medical support to young people in the DBT programme

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The Trust is seeking a Specialty Doctor to join the National Specialist (Tier 4) CAMHS Dialectical Behaviour therapy service. The post holder will join a multidisciplinary team in providing clinical care for children and young people with difficulties with self-harm and suicidal risk who are part of the DBT programme . The post holder will be expected to carry out direct clinical work (assessments and treatments) with young people and families, and will liaise with their local CAMHS and wider networks as appropriate.
