Applications are invited for a Clinical Fellow post Fetal Medicine Day Assessment, gynaecological scanning and emergency gynaecology to be held in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at St George's Healthcare NHS Trust, London.

The Clinical Fellow will work within the post identified above. The job plan is flexible and subject to review. There is an opportunity to be trained and to become proficient in all aspects of obstetric scanning leading to the attainment of the advanced obstetric ultrasound /RCOG ATSM in Fetal Medicine. The successful candidate will be responsible for the co-ordination of care of high-risk antenatal obstetric inpatients and low-risk postnatal patients with complications, in direct liaison with the appropriate consultant. The fellow will also provide medical cover for the day assessment unit, which is predominantly a midwifery run unit working within well-defined protocols and guidelines. The appointment will include work within the fetal medicine unit and experience in diagnosis and management of complex fetal anomalies as well as exposure to invasive procedures and fetal therapies.

Main duties of the job

The Fetal Medicine Unit deals with routine prenatal screening and ultrasound assessment of the fetus, as well as with the diagnosis and management of more complex fetal anomalies. Over 10 000 routine scans are performed annually and the unit also receives tertiary referrals from other local district hospitals. The Day Assessment Unit has been set up to deal with urgent complications of pregnancy in non-labouring women. It is largely a midwifery-led unit working to established protocols and guidelines. It receives referrals from GP's and community midwives as well as reviewing patients from the hospital antenatal clinics. Within the Day 10 Assessment Unit are established clinics to assess women prior to elective caesarean section as well as women with prolonged pregnancy.The candidate will be expected to provide a service in the Day Assessment Unit under the management direction of the Consultant in charge of the unit (Dr Amar Bhide). The job will involve provision of medical input for women who have problems outside the established protocols. The candidate will be trained in obstetric ultrasound assessment of the fetus and will be involved in ultrasound assessment within the fetal medicine unit as well as the day assessment unit.

The job is ideal for a candidate interested in commencing an MD with the eventual aim of taking up the role of sub-specialty training in MFM. Alternatively, a candidate may be interested in developing skills in ultrasound scanning and fetal Medicine with a view to take up the role of Lead consultant in Fetal Medicine.

Person Specification
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • Part II MRCOG
  • Registration to GMC
  • Part I (theory) RCR/RCOG diploma/ATSM in Fetal Medicine
  • A pre registration year
  • At least two years spent working full time in O& G.
  • Initiated some relevant research during their career to date
  • Experience in Obstetrics and gynaecology to SpR year 3
  • Understanding of principles of research and audit
  • Understanding of management principles
  • Able to deal with basic management of obstetric emergencies as well as pregnancy complications
  • Advanced obstetric and/or gynaecological ultrasound training
  • Previous research experience
  • Able to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team
  • Able to cooperate with colleagues on research projects
  • Flexible in dealing with workload in the department
  • Punctual
  • Ability to organise own time and learning
  • Shows initiative
  • Potential to cope with stressful situations and undertake responsibility
  • Good communication skills, both written and verbal
