The Department of General Anaesthesia sits within the Division of Surgery; however the wider anaesthesia service bridges four clinical divisions of UHBW: Surgery (general anaesthesia and critical care), Specialised Services (cardiac anaesthesia), Women’s and Children’s (paediatric and obstetric anaesthesia) and Weston Business Unit.
Main duties of the job
The Department of Anaesthesia is seeking consultants in general anaesthesia to join the team based at Weston General Hospital. The post will be offered at 10 PAs. The successful applicant will join the team in supporting a busy and high quality service providing general anaesthesia in a small hospital, with the support of, and close work with, the wider department across all UHBW sites.
The post will be based at Weston General Hospital and will support the provision of general anaesthesia services for a variety of specialties, including upper and lower GI surgery, trauma & orthopaedics, gynaecology and urology. There will be the opportunity to work across the UHBW sites; however, applicants should expect the majority of their work to focus on Weston. In addition to daytime sessions, the successful applicant will participate in the weekend on-call rota (currently approximately 1:7) and evening sessions (currently approximately 1:7) covering emergency operations until 20:00. The Department of Anaesthesia supports the pre-operative assessment service, and as such the appointee will contribute to this area.

UHBW is a teaching Trust with close links to Southmead Hospital and the University of Bristol. There is a strong tradition of teaching in the department, and we support the running of Bristol Medical Simulation Centre.
The applicant must hold FRCA (UK) or equivalent and be within 6 months of their CCT date at the time of interview. We are looking for applicants who are prepared to work flexibly to ensure smooth service delivery and there is opportunity to develop a specialist interest. Weston-Super-Mare is situated in picturesque countryside and is easily commutable distance from Bristol. The hospital itself has many great benefits including on-site parking and five-minute walk to the beach.

Qualifications & Training
Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC)
Holder of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Anaesthesia or evidence of within six months of award of CCT or equivalent by date of interview
Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a range of problems, both emergency and elective – including anaesthesia for upper and lower abdominal surgery, gynaecological surgery, orthopaedics and trauma surgery
Evidence of a specialist interest in at least one of the following areas: regional anaesthesia, perioperative medicine
Ability to take full and independent responsibility for the clinical care of patients
Evidence of developing a specialist service or demonstration of innovation in chosen sub-speciality area
Evidence of advanced training in at least one of the following areas: Pain,
Lower GI, Upper GI, Pre-operative assessment, Vascular access,
Orthopaedics, Gynaecological anaesthesia
Clinical Knowledge and skills
Log-book evidence of Maxillofacial, ENT, oral surgery, Thoracic, Lower and Upper GI cases, Hepatobiliary, Pre-operative assessment, Obstetrics and Pain
Clinical Governance and Audit
Ability to teach in General Anaesthesia.
Knowledge of the principles of clinical audit and evidence of participation
Evidence of relevant publications or regional or national presentations.
Active participation in research
Evidence of relevant publications or regional or national presentations.
Teaching and Training
Experience of teaching medical students
Experience in use of simulation training and organisation of simulation courses for anaesthesia or medicine.
Certificate in Medical Education or higher degree in teaching.
