Job Details

The General Hospital in Jersey is looking for a Consultant Paediatrician to join the department of four Consultants and seven Middle Grades. We provide acute and ambulatory services to the 16,000 children in Jersey, including level 1 Neonatal Care. We take great pride in providing a high-quality service and are well supported by specialist colleagues in the UK, including PICU and emergency retrieval. The post attracts 10 PAs within the Health and Community Services Department of the States of Jersey, based on but independent of the NHS UK. The Consultant Pay Scale is competitive as are the tax arrangements. A generous study leave budget allows Consultants to continue their professional development.

If you are a General Paediatrician or a Community Paediatrician with Neonatal skills and looking for an opportunity to lead a fulfilling career in a beautiful and safe environment, then Jersey is the place for you.

Full travelling expenses are paid from a UK port of entry, with a generous relocation package available. The post attracts residential qualifications and under Jersey Law, applicants must possess full registration with the General Medical Council and hold a licence to practise.
Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will be part of a team providing acute and ambulatory medical care to children in Jersey. On call is 1:4 with consultant of the week. Prospective cover is provided in the form of the consultant locum policy, which remunerates for cross covering colleagues annual leave.

The post holder would be required to deliver 5.5 sessions of direct clinical care a week, in the form of ward rounds and clinics. There are 2.5 sessions per week of SPA time and 2 sessions in lieu of on call duties. On call duties, evening and weekends are non-resident, with an experienced SAS doctor on site 24 hours a day. Duties would include general paediatrics and neonates. Management of paediatric and neonatal emergencies is frequently necessary. Because of the isolation on the island the post holder will need to be confident dealing with these eventualities, with support from our local ITU and intensivists, as well as PICU and NICU units in the UK. There are also close working links with tertiary Centres like Southampton general hospital.

Ward admissions are typical of a small DGH in the NHS UK. We receive support from local surgical specialities including ENT and general surgery, but some surgical and medical problems need treatment in tertiary centres in the UK.

Job description
Job responsibilities

Where necessary PICU retrieval teams will transfer children to the UK. At times Consultants and SAS doctors will accompany children to UK centres when they are not critically ill. Neonatal transfers are frequently performed by the Jersey Consultants and it is hoped that the post holder will participate in this. Training for this is provided.

We have a robust governance system, local policies, guidelines and pathways, audits, structured judgemental reviews. The post holder would be expected to participate in and support this process.

In addition to SAS doctors, we have a GP ST1 trainee. We also have medical students on attachment from the University of Southampton. Participation in teaching, training and supporting these doctors and students would be expected

The post holder will be expected to participate in the training of Medical Staff for whom he/she is responsible and ensure that training and learning needs are identified and facilitated. Junior doctors will be appraised at appropriate intervals.

The post holder will be expected to take part in management and audit activities and represent the service at Hospital meetings, as agreed with colleagues. The post holder will be expected to be fully involved in a Risk Management programme and support the Governance agenda.

There is a Consultant Locum Policy that encourages cover within the Department without employment of locums. Extra duties are financially rewarded from departmental locum fund. The policy does allow a locum to cover leave for short periods if necessary. Applicants should acquaint themselves with this policy by requesting the policy document from the HR Department.

The successful candidate should be adaptable, flexible and innovative in order to meet the ongoing challenges within the service.

1:4 on call, with a set on call day during the week and shared 1:4 Fridays and weekends. Prospective cover is provided and remunerated by way of the Consultant Locum Policy. We run a Consultant of the Week rota, to provide consultant delivered services with extended consultant presence, to meet supervision and to meet an increased general and specialist paediatric and Neonatal inpatient service. All other duties cancelled during this week. At other times clinics and SPA activities are undertaken.

We are a small department, currently composed of 6 Paediatric Consultants, 7 Paediatric Staff Grades, and 1 GP trainee doctor.

We provide acute and ambulatory care to the approximately 16,000 children living in Jersey. This includes Neonatal Care, Acute Paediatric Medical Care and Ambulatory Care. Acute services are delivered at the General Hospital. Robin Ward (the Childrens ward) has 12 beds and cares for medical and surgical in-patients with 1600 admissions per year. Outpatient services are provided for approximately 850 new patients per annum. Visiting consultants deliver clinics in Paediatric Neurology, Paediatric Cardiology, Paediatric Respiratory medicine, Paediatric Gastroenterology, Paediatrics Urology and Paediatric Endocrinology.

The post holder will form part of the on call team, participating in a 1:4 on call rota, covering General Paediatrics and Neonates. On calls are non-resident with resident staff grade doctors as first on call.

The successful applicant will provide 5.5 episodes of direct clinical care which will include ward rounds and outpatient clinics. 2.5 Sessions per week are allocated to SPA time and there are 2 sessions off in lieu of on-call. Development of a special interest will be encouraged and supported.

We receive local support from Adult Intensive Care, and the surgical team, including General Surgery, ENT, Orthopaedics and Maxillofacial surgery. We also receive support from CAMHS, Physiotherapy, OT, Speech and Language Therapy and Dietetics.

There are about 1000 deliveries in the Maternity Unit annually. We run a level 1 Neonatal Unit, but frequently need to stabilise preterm babies prior to transfer to tertiary unit. Appropriate cases are transferred to NICU by our own team, but the Southampton PICU will retrieve particularly unstable newborns. Our policy is that complicated pregnancies, including antenatally diagnosed malformations, and deliveries expected before 30 weeks gestation, deliver in tertiary units in the UK. Similarly we will occasionally need to provide urgent care to critically ill children prior to the arrival of the PICU retrieval team.

There is an active Departmental teaching programme to which all members of the team contribute. There is also a generous study leave budget and ample annual study leave allocation, to allow the post holder to maintain their CPD. Annual appraisal is mandatory, which supports GMC revalidation. We have a good record of staff grades achieving MRCPCH, and we offer MRCPCH preparation tutorials for exam candidates and support through the CESR process. We have final year students on clinical attachments from Southampton Medical School, and GP trainees from Wessex, so clinical teaching is an important part of the job.
