An exciting opportunity has arisen for a full time Junior Clinical Fellow within the Neurosurgical department at UHCW. This will be an ST1/2 equivalent position.

This is a ward based medical Junior Clinical Fellow position and successful candidates will be exposed to the medical management of neurosurgical patients across our 46 bedded Neurosurgery unit including our Neurosurgical Enhanced Care Unit (NECU). Candidates are not required to have indepth knowledge and experience of neurosurgery, and will be provided with teaching and training throughout their role on the management of neurosurgical conditions.

The Neurosurgical department has a mixture of trainee and non-trainee junior doctors and are supported by both trainee and non-trainee middle grades. Successful candidates will be given an Educational Supervisor and be expected to attend training sessions and participate in clinical audits and quality improvement projects.

This would be a perfect opportunity to learn more about clinical neurosurgery and obtain F1 and F2 competencies ready to apply for training posts, or to simply learn important practical clinical skills in preparation for higher exams.

Main duties of the job

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Seeing acutely unwell patients
  2. Reviewing/ clerking neurosurgical patients
  3. Daily review of neurosurgery in-patients in conjunction with/ under the supervision of the consultant and SpR, including those out-lying on other wards
  4. Cannulating patients, and performing ward based procedures such as Lumbar Punctures
  5. Ordering investigations and tests (and chasing these to ensure they are performed in a timely manner)
  6. Acknowledging and acting upon blood results in timely manner
  7. Preparing e-discharges and TTOs for patients
  8. Prescribing and reviewing medications
  9. To see emergency admissions under the guidance of senior staff and ensure that proper notes are made, investigations instituted and treatment carried out under
  10. Participate in the academic and educational programme of the department
  11. Safeguarding Children and Vulnerable Adults is your Familiarisation with and adherence to UHCW Safeguarding policies and Coventry and Warwickshire Safeguarding Board procedures is an essential requirement of all employees, as is the participation in related mandatory training.
