About us

The Colorectal Department of Frimley Health now comprises 2 acute sites with twelve colorectal surgeons. While there are potential opportunities to gain experience in laparoscopic colorectal surgery at the Wexham Park site, the fellowship is based at Frimley Park where there are three SpRs, one Laparoscopic Fellow, two core trainees, and one Fy1. The Colorectal unit has SACapproval for three, year 5/6 trainees.

The colorectal unit sees approximately 250 cancers each year. We enjoy a close working relationship with the departments of histopathology, radiology, oncology, palliative care and gastroenterology. Exposure in EMR, anorectal physiology and pelvic floor surgery, endoanal ultrasound, Transanal Endoscopic Operations (TEO) and laparoscopic hernia repair is also available. The unit has electronic data on all cancers and all laparoscopic operations.

All members of the colorectal department perform laparoscopic colorectal surgery. They have extensive experience in surgical training and are faculty members of a number of laparoscopic courses at home and overseas. The unitoffers an excellent experience of LCRS and is one of the busier units in the UK.

Job responsibilities

Key tasks and responsibilities:

Develop experience in advanced laparoscopic colorectal surgery. It is anticipated that at the end of the 6-month period the appointee will have performed or assisted with approximately40 major laparoscopic procedures. It is expected thatby the end of the periodthey will be capable of independent Consultant practice in this area.

Develop experience in the training of less experienced surgeons in basic laparoscopic colorectal procedures.The Fellow will be responsible for:
  • Smooth running and coordination of operating lists and the junior doctor theatre allocation
  • The setting up of original research and managing the Monday morning business/academic meetings.
  • Supervise audit projects
  • Attendance at other Colorectal Units as required.
  • Undertake, publish and present research on LCRS
  • Participation in the General Surgical On-call rota
  • An average of 2 sessions service commitment per week

The post is well suited to peri-CCT applicants wishing to increase their experience of laparoscopic colorectal surgery. The most recent fellows have been involved in75-100 cases and performed over 40 cases, most cases are performed by trainees on a modular basis. All previous fellows are now established LCR consultants. You should expect to become proficient at Laparoscopic right hemicolectomy, Lap sigmoid colectomy and high anterior resection in addition to training in TME, TEO and pouch surgery. There will be an introduction to robotic surgery. The unit providesbench training facilities for practicing suturing etc.
