The role of the Clinical and Protecting Health Directorate is to protect the people of Scotland from infectious and environmental hazards; enable high-quality clinical and public health knowledge, research and innovation; and change clinical and public health practice by using audits at a national and local level.
We are seeking to appoint Consultants to work across the Directorate in the following service areas:
- Respiratory Unit: including surveillance of COVID-19, Influenza and other respiratory virus (e.g. RSV, Avian influenza), TB, Legionella, Pneumococcal, GAS/IGAS
- Gastrointestinal and Zoonoses Unit: Gastrointestinal, Zoonosis and One health projects
Working closely with key stakeholders and colleagues nationally, regionally, and locally you will identify, develop, facilitate, and embed the national and corporate priorities recognising the need for collective action to reduce health inequality gaps that persist within our communities. Our successful candidates will provide leadership, management and expert specialist advice on issues relating to the service area, evaluation of effectiveness of interventions and improve outcomes for people in communities and to develop a culture that will focus on impact and solutions.
You will work with colleagues across Scotland linking into Scottish networking/co-ordination e.g. Scottish Health Protection Network.
You will use an evidence-based approach to inform the work of the Public Health Scotland and their partners and have the skills to work with partners to drive forward change.
The posts will report directly to either the:
- PHS Head of Health Protection (Infection Services) – Respiratory & Gastrointestinal and Zoonoses; or
- PHS Interim Head of Health Protection (Environment & Emergency Response) – Environmental Public Health
The Candidate:
We are looking for Consultants with specialist knowledge, expertise and experience at a senior level. You will have the experience and ability to prioritise your own work effectively and be able to direct activities of/to others working with a range of stakeholders in a politically sensitive and changing environment.
The successful candidates will require to be eligible as a competent person under the Public Health Etc (Scotland) Act 2008.
Candidates must have current GMC/GDC/UKPHR registration at the time of applying. Eligible candidates are those with inclusion in either the GMC full and specialist register with a license to practice or the UK Public Health Register (UKPHR) for Public Health Specialists.
The successful candidates will be required to undergo a PVG Scheme/Disclosure Scotland check. Any candidate who has lived/worked overseas for more than 12 months in the preceding 5 years will also be required to provide a criminal record check from the appropriate overseas agency.
Location and Working Pattern:
The post will be based in Meridian Court, Glasgow or Gyle Square, Edinburgh. PHS operate a hybrid working model with a mixture of working at home and days in the office each week. Please note that PHS is currently in the process of relocating from Meridian Court to another Glasgow City Centre location.
There will be an expectation to travel to local areas for some meetings and events.
The work pattern is Monday to Friday and the post holder will participate in the Out of Hours on-call duty rota (which includes weekends) for the full range of health protection and specialist public health emergencies. For the period of on-call work, there is a need to be within 1 hour travelling time from the Glasgow or Edinburgh base.
During times of public health emergency, or other urgent business need, you may be required on a temporary basis to work your normal contracted working hours over 7 days including weekends, in order to meet the needs of the service.
It is a condition of this employment that you must live in and remain a resident within the UK for the post in which you will be employed with PHS.
