An opportunity has arisen for an experienced psychiatrist to become Associate Medical Director (AMD) for SAS doctors and work as part of the collective leadership team which will ensure that effective and safe patient care is delivered in a person-centred manner ensuring that decision making is as close to the patient as possible. The Associate Medical Director will be working within a care group model as part of a collective leadership team (CLT).The role will entail oversight of SAS doctors working to organisational requirements whilst influencing areas of direct operational managerial responsibility and clinical pathways with a proportionally shared accountability and responsibility for the quality delivery of services. They will be the professional Lead and representative for SAS doctors at Care Group level.
Applicants with experience in Adult, Older People, Children and Young People, Learning Disability, Forensic and Autism services are welcome to apply. The substantive clinical base of the successful candidate will depend upon their specialty and vacant posts at the time of interview. The weekly job plan for the successful candidate will be discussed on an individual basis and can be adapted flexibly.
Main duties of the job
The Associate Medical Director will be expected to display the Trust values at all times. They will work as part of the collective leadership team which will ensure that effective and safe patient care is delivered in a person-centred manner ensuring that decision making is as close to the patient as possible.
The Associate Medical Director will provide a visible, accessible and authoritative presence in clinical areas upon which service users can rely to ensure that the fundamentals of care are right.
The post holder will provide professional advice on the SAS workforce with responsibility for liaising with other AMDs and lead psychiatrists who have line manager responsibilities. They will help ensure continuous professional developments are in place, through regular contact with the SAS Tutor and Advocate.
Working closely with the CLT, they will ensure the provision of services within an integrated governance framework that is safe, effective, and efficient and maintains standards against a broad range of local, national, and statutory requirements and policies.
In addition, they will support and facilitate all SAS doctors to be adherent with the professional fitness to practice obligations in line with GMC revalidation requirements. They will act as the link between the SAS workforce and the Medical Directorate in relation to specific areas of responsibility including workforce planning, contractual matters, and performance management.

The Post Holder may also be asked to attend relevant governance groups within their CLT ensuring there is a consistent approach to high quality, compliant, safe, and effective practice
The Post Holder will oversee and help advise on matters of effective line management as well as oversight on supervision, appraisal, and job planning.
The post holder will be committed to ensuring the provision of excellence in person centred care that will include the promotion of recovery, social inclusion, and normalisation across all areas of psychiatry in the care group.
They may be required to deputise for other AMD colleagues or indeed the Deputy Medical Director at relevant forums both internally and external to the Trust as required and act as a strategic lead as necessary in areas of service delivery and development from time to time.
In all of the above the post holder will be expected to act collectively, collaboratively, and effectively within all portfolio areas and to be able to challenge current thinking positively and creatively in order to continuously improve policy and operational working practices.
Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
- Medical Degree
- Current registration with the GMC or other regulatory body
- Evidence of training within Management Leadership
- Evidence of continuing professional and personal development
Desirable
- Postgraduate qualifications in areas relevant to post, eg: Leadership or Education TEWV QIS
- Certified Leader (or within agreed timescale)
Experience
Essential
- Significant experience at Specialty doctor / Specialist Psychiatrist or Consultant level including in medical/educational management
- Working collaboratively with statutory, voluntary and private sector agencies.
- Teaching and training.
- Participation and supervision of quality and service improvement initiatives
- Experience of strategic management and leadership
- Managing quality and assurance governance issues
- Developing policy and services within a healthcare organisation.
- Leading organisational change, including internal and external consultation processes.
- Representing a healthcare organisation at external forums.
- Managing human resources and financial management issues within a healthcare setting.
- Undertaking research and development activities.
