We seek an enthusiastic and committed individual to work within Perth and Kinross Health and Social Care Partnership’s psychiatry of old age service. The organisation values the knowledge, experience and leadership skills of consultant old age psychiatrists.

Perth and Kinross is an area of central Scotland renowned for its natural beauty. It is an area of approximately 2000 square miles with Perth as the main centre and several market towns such as Kinross, Auchterarder, Crieff, Aberfeldy, Pitlochry and Blairgowrie all 20-30 miles away. Perth and Kinross has one of the largest populations of elderly people in Scotland and there is a mixture of all levels of socio-economic class and deprivation.

Perth and Kinross is an unparalleled destination for a work life balance. With hills, serene lochs and crystal clear rivers within easy reach of the higher mountain ranges and ski areas of Glencoe and the Cairngorms it is an outdoor enthusiast’s heaven. Welcoming outdoor companies, guides, walking, mountaineering and canoeing groups abound to help you explore. It is also an amazing destination for fishing and golf.

For the times when culture is wanted, castles, historic sites, museums, art galleries, theatres, music festivals, farmers markets and Michelin starred restaurants exist within the county. Perth is also within easy reach of both Glasgow and Edinburgh both about an hour away, with good rail links.

You will find a community welcoming to newcomers, unparalleled opportunities for families with good schools, clubs and activities, and an amazing welcome for your four legged friends with many dog-friendly facilities.

Perthshire regularly ranks as a top holiday destination and Perth has ranked 11th happiest place to live in the UK 2021 (Rightmove’s Happy at Home Index).

This 10 session post is based at Murray Royal Hospital and includes:

•             Community work in the Strathmore Older Adults’ CMHT (5.5 DCCs). The Strathmore area of Perthshire includes areas such as Blairgowrie, Coupar Angus, Alyth and Glenshee. The CMHT and care home liaison team are based at Blairgowrie Community Hospital. BCH also has a GP inpatient unit, where the successful candidate would be expected to provide liaison psychiatry input, but there are no old age psychiatry beds. Outpatient clinics are held at BCH and at Murray Royal Hospital. The post holder would normally plan to spend one day per week based in Blairgowrie and may need to travel to the Strathmore area at other times.

•             Garry Ward (2.5 DCCs), a 12-bedded dementia assessment ward at Murray Royal Hospital.

•             2 SPA, including 1 SPA for appraisal and revalidation and 1 SPA for other activities selected by the successful candidate, which may include medical education, research, management, etc. The successful candidate will be asked to supervise a junior doctor, which would require 0.25 of this SPA. Consultants with a significant local teaching or research commitment may be awarded Honorary Senior Clinical Teacher status by the University of Dundee.

Prospective candidates who feel their skills lie in other areas of the service can be reassured that the current consultant group are willing to be flexible within the job planning process and a change of duties could be negotiated prior to acceptance of the post. We welcome applications from individuals wishing to work less than full-time. The department has an excellent track record of supporting medical staff with disabilities and chronic health problems.

The start date is 2 August 2023 but can be made flexible up to the start of February 2024 depending on the needs of the successful candidate.

Applicants must be on the specialist register for psychiatry or be within 6 months of the anticipated award of a CCT/CESR (CP) or already in possession of CESR in psychiatry at the time of interview for the post.

We welcome enquiries regarding the post; prospective candidates are encouraged to come to Murray Royal and meet us prior to the formal interviews if they wish. Please either telephone our admin team on 01738 562 348 or email Dr Hepburn mhairi.hepburn@nhs.scot.

Interviews will take place on the 6th July 2023.

Candidates will have the choice of face to face or Microsoft Teams for interview.
