Southwark neurodevelopmental CAMHS – FIXED TERM 12 MONTHS full time Specialty Doctor in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Southwark Neurodevelopmental Service part of Southwark CAMHS, for a full time Specialty Doctor in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, based at Sunshine House Children and Young People's Development Centre.

Southwark NDS CAMHS provides comprehensive assessment and treatment of children and young people up to age 18 with neurodevelopmental disorders and /or Intellectual disability who have comorbid mental health disorder +/- challenging behaviour.

Typically we see children with ASD, ADHD, ID, and genetic disorders and acquired syndromes such as FASD where the behavioural phenotype entails neurodevelopmental and psychiatric problems.

In addition to providing therapy; cognitive behavioural therapy, positive behavioural therapy and pharmacological management we run psychoeducation and treatment groups such as the psychoeducation ADHD course, and specialist parenting courses for Parents of children ASD and  ADHD.

The post does not include any out of hours on call commitments. Clinical work is carried out face to face at Sunshine House and whenever clinically appropriate on Microsoft Teams Clinical supervision to the post holder will be provided by the Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist who is also the line manager for the post. 

Main duties of the job

We are looking to appoint a specialty doctor with excellent organisation and communication skills and the ability to work independently but also seek advice and guidance as appropriate from the clinical supervisor and members of the MDT.

The key areas of responsibilities are:

  • To carry out mental health & risk assessments on children & young people and to manage these situations effectively.
  • To use pharmacological interventions, as appropriate, in partnership with children and their families and networks of care.
  • To assume responsibility for own case list and case management of children and families, with support from the clinical supervisor.

Sunshine House Children and Young People's Development Centre 27 Peckham Rd, London SE5 8UH. 10 minutes walk from Denmark Hill Station (zone 2)

South London and Maudsley NHS Trust headquarters is located at Denmark Hill less than 5 minutes from the train station (zone 2). 

The team also offers placements to Core and Higher Trainees on the SLAM/Oxleas Training scheme.
