Job Details

This is a 10 PA locum appointment for a Consultant in Neurology. An interest in Movement Disorders would be advantageous but not an absolute requirement for this locum position. This post will be available from 31/5/23 for a period of 6 months with potential extension to cover for a years sabbatical leave post within the Neurology Department at Leeds General Infirmary.

This post will deliver 10 PAs supporting the Neurology and Movement Disorder teams. The neurology department has 16 Consultant Neurologists and the present movement disorders service is well established with 3 consultants presently in post and 4 specialist nurses. Clinics are delivered at Leeds General Infirmary, Seacroft and Wharfedale sites as well as some remote clinics. We are looking for a Consultant Neurologist ideally (but not an absolute requirement) with an interest in Parkinsons Disease and experience of performing dystonia injections and treatments to cover for 6 months initially with potential extension to one year. Candidates will work with the existing team to deliver general neurology clinics, special interest clinics and Parkinsons clinics of the Leeds and West Yorkshire PCTs.

In addition, the successful candidate will be part of the neurology general on-call 1:10 rota. This post does not cover stroke on-call. On call is supported by a team of 8 registrars.

The post will be based at Leeds General Infirmary, but clinics can be at LGI, Seacroft and Wharfedale.
Main duties of the job

Deliver care to patients with Neurological disorders at Leeds General Infirmary, providing

2 general neurology clinics with 8 new or 16 follow ups in each clinic (usually a mixed clinic of 12 patients), one specialist interest clinic and one Parkinsons clinics (maximum 6 new patients in 40 minute slots or 12 follow ups in 20 minute slots.

Supervision of patients on the in patient wards

Care of in-patients on a 1 in 10 on call rota

Contribute to Specialist Multi-disciplinary team meetings

Contribute to medical student and junior doctor teaching

Will link with Consultant colleagues in acute teams at the LGI and St James hospitals to deliver neurological care to patients in the medical directorate.

Will work with colleagues in neurology to deliver acute on call (currently 1 in 10) for neurology. This includes both out-of-hours cover in addition to acute ward rounds during normal working hours.

The appointee will be expected to contribute and, where appropriate, take the lead in the following:

Mortality and morbidity meetings

Clinical audit programmes

Development and application of agreed clinical guidelines.

This is to be included in allocated time in the individuals job plan as a supporting programmed activity. It would be expected that the time allocated for this would include attendance at the relevant departmental audit meeting(s) and that such attendance would be recorded (in accordance with the Trusts clinical audit policy).

The CSU brings together the core services providing the clinical management support for the Departments of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Neurophysiology. Mr Robert Rathbone is the General Manager of the CSU, Dr John Steele is Clinical Director and Mr Robin Darby is Head of Nursing. Dr Maruthi Vinjam is Clinical Lead for Neurology and Ms Linda Hayward is the Business Manager for Stroke and Neurology.
