Senior Clinical Fellow in Breast Surgery
12 month fixed term contract
The Trust is seeking to appoint a Senior Clinical Fellow in Breast Cancer and Reconstructive surgery. There is the option of Cosmetic Breast surgery experience which is provided as part of a non-NHS private practice initiative. You will be part of a team of four Consultants and a Trust Consultant providing a full range of services for symptomatic and breast screening patients.
The Breast Surgery Service is part of the 650 bedded Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro, with two further hospitals, St Michael's Hospital in Hayle and the West Cornwall Hospital in Penzance. All breast clinical and diagnostic work is carried out at the Mermaid Centre in Truro in a purpose built unit. Most routine breast surgery is undertaken at St Michael's Hospital where there are ring-fenced dedicated beds.
This busy and dynamic breast unit manages both symptomatic and breast screening patients. We treat approximately 550 patients a year with a new diagnosis of breast cancer and see approximately 12,000 out patients annually. The service provides a full range of oncoplastic procedures including a good volume of therapeutic and reduction mammoplasties as well as a comprehensive reconstructive service. We offer implant / ADM based reconstructions (pre and sub pectoral placement and a pedicle flap service. We have access to the free flap service in Exeter and Plymouth but not on site.
Main duties of the job
The RCHT breast unit is an active research centre and eligible patients are offered entry into several multicentre national surgical trials such as POSNOC, LORIS and POBRAD M as well as a large number of oncology trials. In additional we are at the forefront of technological advances we use radioguided occult lesion localisation (ROLL) and have the largest national series, we have a 3D Tomosynthesis unit in theatre and are introducing 3D assessment in outpatients for our breast reconstruction patients.
Exposure to the local cosmetic practice aims to provide enough experience to help towards certification in cosmetic breast surgery. The cosmetic practice (a single Consultant - Professor Drew) takes place in non-NHS time and this gives ample opportunity for the observation of breast augmentation, mastopexy and reduction. The consultants will also provide opportunities to discuss complex cases as listed on the certification requirements and there will be opportunities for out of hours' attendance at cosmetic consultations. This part of the post is voluntary and is not remunerated by the Trust.
