As a GP Federation we work closely with our local Acute Hospitals and provide a GP in the Emergency Department with Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust (SASH). We have 2 years experience in developing successful rotational and split posts for Physician Associates between SASH wards and Primary Care Network roles specialising in Frailty and Urgent Care / Acute Medicine.
The role will be a split post, working alongside our GP's in the Emergency Department at Surrey & Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust (SASH). The Physician Associate will work under the supervision of the GP in ED and also gain valuable experience in other elements of the emergency pathway within SASH including paediatric ED.
This role also has the option to be split with working in primary care within a local GP surgery (Healthy Horley PCN) and is suitable for new graduate PAs or those wishing to pursue a portfolio career.
The posts will be fully supported by the KSS School of Physician Associates and there will be the opportunity to take part in a fully funded GP Preceptorship incorporating primary care education and access to mentoring. The post holders will also work alongside PAs working in the ED and wider team of 24 PAs working at SASH.
Working hours will be 37 per week, with hours comprised of Thursday & Friday 10:00 - 22:00 at SASH (and the occasional Saturday), with the rest of the time at Healthy Horley.
Main duties of the job
Working in the Primary Care Team within the Emergency Department at SASH and within General Practice, the post holder will:-
- Provide care for the presenting patient from focused history taking, clinical assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and evaluation of care.
- Demonstrate safe, clinical decision-making and expert care, including assessment and diagnostic skills, for patients within the service.
- Demonstrate critical thinking in the decision-making process.
- Work collaboratively with the healthcare team to meet the needs of the patients, supporting the delivery of policy and procedures.
- Provide a holistic and clinical service, with support and supervision of experienced GPs, implementing agreed management plans and following approved protocols as appropriate.
This post will provide first point of contact care for a range of patients presenting with undifferentiated, undiagnosed problems and allow the PA to work to the full scope of their practice and gain skills in urgent care.

Job responsibilities
- Provide first point of contact care for patients presenting with undiagnosed problems and manage a clinical caseload in a primary care setting. The postholder will take a history, carry out any necessary physical examinations and utilise clinical decision-making skills and diagnostic tools to establish a working diagnosis and management plan in partnership with the patient (and carers where applicable)
- Review, analyse and action diagnostic test results
- Deliver integrated patient-centred care through appropriate working with the wider primary care multidisciplinary team and social care colleagues
- Undertake consultations face-to-face
- Provide health promotion/disease prevention advice to patients
- Utilise clinical guidelines and promote evidence-based practice in all interactions with patients
- Participate in clinical audit, significant event reviews and other research
- Participate in continuing professional development activities as agreed with your line manager and clinical supervisors
- Work in accordance with ED Department and GP in ED practice policies
- Record all patient interaction contemporaneously in the patient record
- Provide clinical leadership where appropriate within the service and support other members of the team to develop and maintain clinical skills appropriate to your role and expertise.

Qualifications
Essential
- Registration with the Physician Associate Managed Voluntary Register (PAMVR)
- Completion of Physician Associate Postgraduate Diploma/Masters from an accredited UK University or equivalent and passed the PA National Exam (PANE) administered by the Faculty of Physician Associates.
Experience
Essential
- - Demonstrable patient assessment skills
- - Demonstrates an in-depth knowledge of related medical conditions, treatments and pharmacology
- - Experience of supporting doctors in clinical decision making
- - Ability to work autonomously within the scope of supervised practice
- - Detailed knowledge of maintaining confidentiality and implementing data protection legislation requirements including information governance
- - Understanding of the need for strict confidentiality
- - Able to work under pressure
- - Hard working, flexible, reliable, honest, pleasant and approachable
- - Able to work autonomously with minimal supervision
- - Actively research and retain up to date clinical best practice and industry knowledge.

- - Experience of working in a primary care setting or urgent care setting
