Job Details

This is an exciting time to join The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust (SaTH) as a Physician Associate!

We have, to date, delivered a very successful Physician Associates (PA) service across numerous internal specialities: Cardiology, Care of the elderly, Respiratory, Acute medicine, Gastroenterology, Endocrine and Renal Medicine.. The service has undergone a recent review and now has a structured career progression pathway from Band 6 through to Band 8a in place.

We are pleased to be able to offer a number of new Physician Associates posts at B6 (B7 based on experience) to Physician Associates who are wanting to start a Preceptorship programme. These roles would suit:

  • PAs who are due to graduate and would like to undertake a Preceptorship PA role and to develop their experience
  • PAs working at Band 6 wishing to develop skills and experience within the secondary Care setting.

The posts will rotate across both sites (Shrewsbury and Telford) at SaTH within the following areas, as appropriate:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Renal
  • Respiratory
  • Endocrinology
  • Cardiology
  • Older Persons Medicine
  • Acute Medicine

You should have achieved your Postgraduate Diploma in Physician Associate Studies from an accredited UK training programme and be a member on the UK managed voluntary registry with the Royal College of Physicians Faculty of Physician Associates.

Interviews scheduled for 28th June 2023.
Main duties of the job

  • Participate in the delivery of excellent care to patients as part of a rotation across a number of specialities supported by a Preceptorship programme.
  • Work alongside a team of doctors of varying levels of experience to provide a high-quality service to patients. You will be expected to participate in all aspects of the patient pathway as appropriate and will be expected to perform delegated duties with a high degree of clinical skill and knowledge.
  • You will be required to assess and examine patients, present them, initiate and interpret investigations, and recommend treatment within a defined scope.
  • Where appropriate, the Physician Associate will be allocated time in Speciality clinics under the supervision of senior doctors or consultants. Here you will draw on your knowledge of diagnosis, management and treatment options for the common conditions.
  • The post- holder will have a significant role on the ward/unit, liaising with junior doctors and ward sisters and staff, and in facilitating patient admissions, pathways and discharges. In certain specialities the Physician Associates will have opportunities to undertake training in specialist practical skills (e.g. paracentesis, pleural procedures).
  • Liaise with other professionals and specialties as required and complete necessary documentation relating to their patients.

About us

All Physician Associates will be given an Educational Supervisor as well as individualised mentors to support career development. Work-place based assessments will also be provided for appraisal purposes. There is a specific teaching programme for the PAs in addition to local departmental teaching. We have student PAs from Birmingham University, and you will be asked to assist in their educational while on placement, providing shadowing opportunities and support

The pay for a Physician Associate that has just qualified and has not undertaken a Preceptorship year will be at Band 6, with the opportunity to apply for a B7 post (as available) at the end of their preceptorship year.

More information can be found in the Job description or for an informal discussion, please contact Dr Kat Ibison (Consultant in Respiratory Medicine: katherine.ibison@nhs.net), who can discuss the roles generally and then pass you onto relevant speciality leads if required.
