Consultant Immunologist and Allergist

Applications are invited for a Consultant Immunologist to join our dedicated and enthusiastic team committed to delivering high quality clinical and laboratory services both locally and regionally.

The Clinical Immunology and Allergy department in Leicester provides a specialist Immunology laboratory, adult and paediatric immunodeficiency services, and delivers adult allergy services in conjunction with the Adult Allergy department. The clinical service is accredited to QPIDS and IQAS standards while the laboratory service is fully accredited by UKAS. The Department is a member of the regional Trent Immunology and Allergy Consortium (TRIAC) network, which aims to ensure provision of high quality Clinical Immunology and Allergy services across the broader region.

A locum appointment will be considered. The appointment may be full time or less than full time. This job plan is designed to offer as much flexibility as possible, with options for allergy, paediatrics or other special interests including research. The substantive post is entitled to funded study leave and relocation expenses. Support for a relevant higher degree at a local or national university can be considered. Modification of the job content or working hours will be discussed on a personal basis in consultation with consultant colleagues. There is a mentorship scheme for all new consultant staff. Hospital accommodation can be arranged.

Main duties of the job

You will be expected to participate in day to day functions of the immunology service and immunology laboratory, including outpatient clinics for adult patients with suspected or diagnosed immunodeficiencies, advice and guidance for clinicians within the region, supervision and management of immunoglobulin replacement for patients with primary and secondary immune deficiencies, and participation in the immunodeficiency MDTs and the subregional immunoglobulin advisory panel. You may also choose to participate in adult allergy, paediatric immunodeficiency or other special interests including research.

You will be required to undertake management duties and work within a multidisciplinary team, and participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, clinical audit, research and development

About us

UHL consists of 3 teaching hospitals and is one on the largest hospital trusts in England. Our hospitals include a regional congenital cardiac centre, a nationally renowned respiratory centre and one of the 5 ECMO centres in the UK. Our catchment area includes Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland as well as northern Northamptonshire, accounting for over a million people with significant rural and ethnically diverse populations. The area is a vibrant and welcoming place to live and work, from a modern city to 'picture postcard' villages.

The Immunology laboratory is fully accredited by UKAS and is co-located with clinical offices within a fully integrated Department on the Leicester Royal Infirmary site. There is a planned move to new purpose built premises on this site as part of the UHL 'building better hospitals' reconfiguration programme. The laboratory offers a comprehensive range of immunology assays both locally and regionally for immunodeficiency, autoimmunity, allergy and haematological malignancies.

The Immunology consultants are supported by a Paediatrician with an interest in immunology, 2 Specialist Registrars, 4 Specialist Immunology and Allergy Nurses, a Band 3 Health Care Assistant and a Specialist Dietician. We work collaboratively with 2 Consultant Allergists from the Adult Allergy department and 1 Consultant Clinical Scientist. We are supported by 3 medical secretaries (2.0 WTE) and a dedicated clinic co-ordinator.
