Job summary
We are seeking an enthusiastic individual with appropriate training to join our committed team for this replacement post. The post is based at the Leeds Childrens Hospital at the Leeds General Infirmary in the heart of the city. Specialty Doctors are an integral part of our Paediatric Haematology and Oncology Department. Some of our Specialty Doctors have been with us for over ten years, while others have used the experience gained through working in the post as a stepping stone to a consultant post. The emphasis of the role is the in-patient and out-patient care of patients with non-malignant haematological conditions, especially those undergoing stem cell transplantation.
Main duties of the job
The appointee will primarily be responsible for the day to day care of the paediatric and young adult haematology inpatients undergoing stem cell transplantation. They will be supported in this by the haematology consultants, the paediatric haematology registrar, the adult haematology registrar and the paediatric oncology team. As part of this they will:
Do a daily ward round on the stem cell transplant unit and of other paediatric haematology patients as needed
See patients attending acutely to the day unit
Participate in clinics for stem cell transplant patients and for those with non malignant conditions in a clinic in the paediatric haematology day unit
Support the stem cell transplant team with administrative tasks
Share responsibility for the general anaesthetic lists carrying out haematological procedures (typically lumbar punctures and bone marrow examinations)
Participate in a weekend daytime service to the paediatric oncology department. This will be one weekend in 4 and involves review of all the inpatients and acute presentations to the wards from 0830-2100 on Saturdays and Sundays. This is to assist the general paediatric LST and HST who will also be covering the wards and will be supported by the on call consultant in haematology and oncology.
Participate in the multi-professional paediatric haematology and oncology clinical governance programmes
Co-ordinate the weekly transplant nuggets teaching.

Dr Mike Richards (Associate Medical Director), Dr Beki James (Director of Paediatric Stem Cell Transplant) and Dr Jacob Grinfeld who provide the regional paediatric haematology service.
Additionally, the post holder will work with the paediatric haemato-oncology consultant team which also includes Dr Danielle Ingham, Dr Chris Lethaby and Dr Amy Ruffle; and in the wider department will also work with the paediatric oncologists Professor Adam Glaser (Clinical Lead for the NIHR Childrens Clinical Research Facility), Dr Martin Elliott, Dr Bob Phillips and Dr Simone Wilkins.
There are four paediatric haematology trainees/fellows within the department who work on the wards as well as in the day unit and an active group of research fellows
