Job summary
A vacancy for a Consultant Radiologist has arisen at the West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust. The vacancy is part time, to cover maternity leave. The contact is fixed term to cover maternity leave up to February 2024
The post holder will join the other 18 Consultant Radiologists in providing a comprehensive radiology service to patients in West Suffolk and its environs. All Consultants undertake general radiology including CT, MR, ultrasound, and plain film reporting.
The job is for a General Cross-sectional Radiologist with Subspecialist interest in breast radiology.
The breast imaging team encompasses the full 4 tier skill mix thus supporting learning and development opportunities at all levels. The team includes four Consultant Radiologists, two Consultant Radiographers, one Advanced Practitioner (training to become Consultant Radiographer), Radiographers and Assistant Practitioners.
The successful candidate will have a special interest in breast imaging and will be expected to participate fully in the local breast screening programme and symptomatic breast service. Approximately 4 PAs will be dedicated to this work. The remaining time will be SPA (1.5 PAs) and time in the general department (2.5 PAs). There is the opportunity for the applicant to join the on call rota, which would equate to an additional 1 PA.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will join the other 18 Consultant Radiologists in providing a comprehensive radiology service to patients in West Suffolk and its environs. All Consultants undertake general radiology including CT, MR, ultrasound, and plain film reporting. All Radiologists have specialist interests and support the relevant multidisciplinary teams.
To contribute to the breast service, including:
Breast Screening
Mammogram reporting, performing US and core biopsy of breast and axilla (but excluding stereotactic procedures)
Preparing and presenting at the breast MDT
Participation in consensus meetings
Reporting breast staging CT
To provide specialist radiological advice and services to users of the radiology departments.
To accept responsibility for compliance with Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposures) Regulations, along with the radiation protection supervisor and the radiation protection advisor.
To accept personal responsibility for the clinical care of patients referred.
To provide advice and information as required to clinical colleagues and other staff.
To share responsibility for the supervision, training, and professional development of radiographic staff and other staff as necessary.

The department actively encourages skill mix with the following roles and responsibilities implemented:
There is a Duty Radiologist as part of the rota, available within the department. All requests for in patient Smart imaging examinations are vetted by radiologists and cases are discussed with hospital clinicians and GPs. The postholders will be expected to participate in, and support this process.
The Royal College of Radiologists guide iRefer Making the Best Use of Clinical Radiology is in use to assist with justification of all examinations.
The post holder will also be expected to participate in departmental audit and clinical governance processes, and will be expected to provide training and education to medical and other departmental staff as required. Clinicoradiological conferences and MDTs are recognised as an increasingly important part of the department workload and active participation in the sub speciality meetings of interest will be expected. The department was one of the first in the country to achieve ISAS/QSI accreditation and consultants are expected to embrace and participate in this process.
The posts will be for nine programmed activities The exact nature of these programmed activities will be discussed with the head of department and consultant colleagues prior to taking up the post.
The successful candidate will be expected to hold the Fellowship of the Royal College of Radiologists, or equivalent, and to satisfy the current regulations concerning accreditation prior to taking up this appointment. Accreditation is not, however, a statutory requirement. Since 1st January 1997 it has been a legal requirement for all doctors to be on the Specialist Register before taking up a consultant appointment.
A formal job plan will be agreed between the appointee, the Lead Clinician and their Clinical Director (CD) and their Associate Director of Operations (ADO), on behalf of the Executive Medical Director, three months after commencement. This will be signed by the Clinical Lead and the Associate Director of Operations and will be effective either from the commencement date of the appointment or at an alternative agreed date

- Three radiographers perform contrast fluoroscopy studies
- Several radiographers perform CT Colonography
- Four radiographers report CT Colonography
- Four radiographers undertake some A&E plain film reporting,
- One radiographer reports some nuclear medicine examinations
- One radiographer reports CT head examinations
- Two consultant radiographers undertake film reading and breast localisations
- One specialist radiographer practitioner undertakes breast localisations
- One radiographer performs hysterosalpingography
- One radiographer performs sialography
- One MRI radiographer reports some MRI examinations
- In addition, cross-sectional radiographers vet the majority of the CT and MR studies as long as they follow local protocols.

- NHS breast Screening Programme Accreditation
- Entry on the GMC specialist register in Clinical Radiology or be eligible for entry (within six months of attaining Certificate of Completion of Training) at the time of interview and hold a licence to practice.
- Any other relevant qualifications.

- Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining CCT in Clinical Radiology.
- Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients.
