Job overview

Applications are invited for the post of Consultant in Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgery with a specialist interest in lower limb reconstruction (frames). This is an exciting opportunity to work at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust alongside motivated teams dedicated to quality of care, research, training and service improvement.

Trauma & Orthopaedics at CUH has expanded; as well as being one of the country's largest Major Trauma Centres with daily complex, high energy and frailty trauma being looked after by renowned surgical teams; it is also expanding its elective orthopaedic capacity. The new Cambridge Movement Surgical Hub is the physical embodiment of the growing role within the region.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant would join a large team in one of the busiest Major Trauma Centres in the UK and would be expected to have the skills for treating the multiply-injured patient, open fractures and complex lower limb trauma alongside a multi-specialty trauma team.  In addition, the applicant should have a particular interest in limb reconstruction techniques with an emphasis on frame based surgery and therefore contributing to bone infection and the trauma service, with experience at post-CCT Fellowship (or equivalent) level. It is likely that frailty trauma of the lower limb, open and major trauma, complex regional referrals and bone infection would form a large component of the work load.

You will be fully registered with the GMC and have a CCT and appropriate higher subspecialist training, or be within six months of completion of Fellowship or equivalent at the time of interview. Applications are welcomed from those unable to work full time for personal reasons or those wishing to job-share.

The applicant would take part in the on-call rota and would have a mixed role in trauma and elective orthopaedic surgery, but applicants wishing to focus solely on trauma care would also be supported. CUH provides a highly supportive environment for research and there are opportunities for training of senior and junior trainees, specialist nurses and AHP’s.

Working for our organisation

The applicant must have demonstrable skills in listening, reading, writing and speaking in English that enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues, as set out in the GMC’s Good Medical Practice (2013). Non-UK applicants must possess the IELTS/OET exam before obtaining a GMC licence to practice.

Applications from job seekers who require skilled worker sponsorship to work in the UK are welcome and will be considered alongside all other applications. For further information please visit the UK Visas and Immigration website.

It is a requirement for skilled worker applicants, applying for entry clearance into the UK, to present a criminal record certificate from each country they have resided continuously or cumulatively for 12 months or more in the past 10 years. Adult dependants (over 18 years old) will also be subject to this requirement.

Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is an Equal Opportunities Employer.

As part of our commitment to supporting the medical workforce in the part they play in delivering an excellent caring service to patients, all newly appointed Consultants attend our five-day Consultant Development programme within a year of joining the Trust. Leadership is a key requirement of doctors’ professional work and this innovative programme is designed to support Consultants to hone the leadership and management skills they need to succeed at CUH.
