Job Details

We are seeking to recruit an enthusiastic, innovative, General Paediatricians with a specialty interest in High Dependency Care to complement the department. We are passionate about our ethos and philosophy and are driven to provide the best care for our patients. We are moving into our new Acute Hospital The Midland Metropolitan University Hospital (MMUH) in Spring 2024 which offers many opportunities for the Paediatric Department. Paediatric Medicine has 40 beds over 2 wards and includes 6 HDU and 6 Adolescent beds. The new state of the art acute hospital in Grove Lane, Smethwick will bring together all acute services onto one site.

Main duties of the job

The Paediatric unit is currently hosted across two sites with a number of outpatient specialty services being delivered, including many specialty clinics such as allergy, diabetes, infectious disease and cardiology. The Consultants provide clinical care for patients admitted to a co-located ED/PAU at City Hospital on a rotating basis and also the main paediatric Unit at Sandwell Hospital on a 1 in 8 'hot week' model with 1 in 8 weeks as the 9-5 service Consultant and 1 in 8 as the second on Consultant. HDU patients are looked after in selected areas on the wards throughout the year. The current on-call commitment is 1 in 8. This job will have no neonatal on-call which is covered by a separate rota.

The Paediatric Medicine department is renowned for being a popular site for trainees who have a regular in-house teaching programme. Trainees are also involved in teaching and education. APLS is run within the trust by paediatric consultants. The department has regular presentations at local, national and international meetings of its work, services and innovation.

The successful candidate will be within 6 months of obtaining a CCT in Paediatrics.

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential

  • Entry on the Specialist Register in paediatrics (or entry expected within 6 months from the date of interview)
  • MRCPH or MRCP or equivalent
  • Level 3 safeguarding

Desirable

  • Higher Degree

Clinical Experience
Essential

  • Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining CCT in paediatrics
  • Fulfils all other essential criteria as per Personal Specification
  • GMC registration with License to Practice

Desirable

  • Special interest that complements the existing consultants
  • Formal training in teaching
  • Knowledge and experience of the application of information technology to Paediatrics
  • Publications in relevant peer-reviewed journals in the last 5 years
  • Evidence of having undertaken original research
