About us

NGH is one of the largest employers in the area and all of our divisions are committed to doing things better, with more efficiency as we update, modernise, and advance. We have also entered into a Group Model with neighbouring Kettering General Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

Being a large DGH with a proud history, we are big enough to get interesting cases, but small enough to care, coach and develop. With over 200 consultants, a similar number of trainees and approximately 60medical undergraduates throughout the year, NGH provides comprehensive care and extensive training opportunities.

With this in mind, we have built a state of the art emergency assessment unit (Nye Bevan building) and are developing new ways of working to streamline in-patient care and optimize working with our partners.

NGH also has a large library, gym with swimming pool, and a brand new entrance with Marks and Spencer, Subway and Costa on site.

Job description
Job responsibilities

We are excited to be advertising a number of Emergency Medicine (EM) Senior Clinical Fellow posts, based in our Emergency Department at Northampton General Hospital.

The post is part of an expansion of our Middle Grade tier of doctors, and is designed for candidates who are working at the level of senior decision maker in Emergency Medicine, or who are ready to take this responsibility and wish to advance their career in this exciting specialty.

Successful candidates will be allocated a supervising FRCEM Consultant with a relevant special interest to support their project and will be encouraged to submit project work for presentation regionally/ nationally.

The successful applicant will begin work at a level commensurate with previous experience, likely to be at ST3-6 (registrar) level. The post holder must be registered with the GMC and hold a licence to practice.

Participation in the Departmental teaching programme will be expected, and you will have a designated Emergency Medicine Consultant supervisor for the duration of your post. Our department consistently receives excellent feedback from trainees regarding the friendly working environment, the approachability and supportiveness of senior staff, and the training opportunities available. The Consultant body has a breadth of experience including an FRCEM examiner, and sub-specialty interests in Geriatric Emergency Medicine, Pre-Hospital Emergency Medicine, Wilderness Medicine, Sports medicine, Acute medicine, Education, Emergency ultrasound practitioners, and Level 1 ultrasound trainers.

The successful applicant will initially be offered a fixed term post, with the option to extend/ convert to a permanent post post by mutual agreement.

Motivated clinicians with sufficient Emergency Medicine experience may also wish to discuss the opportunities available within NGH for specialty training to support an application for entry to the EM specialist register, and enable consultant appointment via the CESR route. We currently have 3 consultants who have done this and 5 MGs working towards it.

This is not a HEE recognised post, and you will not receive a National Training Number or a CCT.

Job Purpose

The purpose of this post is twofold:
