This is a substantive post for a Consultant on Obstetrics and Gynaecology with clinical duties between Glangwili Hospital and Withybush General Hospital. The job covers different aspects of Obs and Gyane.

We are looking for an enthusiastic Consultant to join the team and help improving the dynamics of the team. We expect the candidate to be able to work efficiently to help reduce the number of patients waiting on the waiting list, manage clinics and theatre efficiently, and participate in the clinical governance activities in the department.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be joining a motivated team of 4 Consultants based in Withybush Hospital with on calls in Glangwili General Hospital where acute services are based. There 5 Consultants based in Withybush Hospital who join the team to provide the emergency services on the Labour Ward and acute gynaecology cover at Glangwili Hospital, described as a 'Hot Week'. This is currently provided as a 1:12 rota which is 09:00 to 17:00 hours, Monday to Friday. The on calls are 1:12 from 17:00 - 09:00 which are non resident but the Consultant should be available within 30 minutes when on call.

The obstetric unit at Glangwili has approximately 3,500 deliveries per year and is where the neonatal unit is located. There is a dedicated Gynae ward with a well established Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit, Colposcopy services and Hysteroscopy services in Withybush Hospital.

Highly specialised and tertiary services commissioned by the Welsh Health Specialised Services Committee, a joint committee representing seven health boards across Wales.

Job responsibilities

The successful candidate for this Consultant post will be eligible to hold an Honorary Academic title at a partner university on the understanding that they will participate in undergraduate teaching, including acting as an examiner, and support and facilitate research activities in an appropriate university faculty and school. They will take direction in these activities via the appropriate academic lead. The agreement to define the Honorary Academic responsibilities and associated programmed activities in relation to teaching time and research will be negotiated jointly between the post holder, the university and the Health Board. It will form part of the successful candidates job plan. The award of the Honorary Academic contract will be dependent upon a formal application being submitted to the university in accordance with the Honorary Appointments procedures and will be available on a fixed term basis subject to satisfactory performance in the academic activity undertaken.

Qualifications
Essential

  • Full GMC Registration and Licence to Practise
  • On Specialist Register/SpR due to obtain relevant CCT/CESR(CP) within 6 months of interview
  • MRCOG
  • Valid certified advanced life support skills

Desirable

  • Appropriate Higher Degree e.g. MD, PhD or MSc or equivalent

Clinical Experience
Essential

  • Broad based experience in Obstetrics and Gynaecology
  • Knowledge of UK hospital systems (or equivalent)
  • Knowledge and participation in CPD
  • Competence in speciality of Obstetrics and Gynaecology
  • Able to apply knowledge
  • Safe and effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Knowledge and experience of communicating bad news
  • Meet the requirement of the GMC's Good Medical Practice

Desirable

  • Experience of NHS
  • Wider experience, research and training in providing sub specialty service
  • Evidence of above average performance
  • Membership of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists
  • Additional clinical qualification(s)

  • Evidence of participation in clinical audit and understanding role of audit in improving medical practice

Research

  • Experience and knowledge of critical appraisal of evidence so as to improve clinical outcomes

  • Evidence of organising programmes and teaching medical students and junior doctors
  • Willingness to teach all grades of professional multidisciplinary staff

  • Knowledge of the management and structure of the NHS
