Locum Upper GI Consultant (10 PA's) - 6 months fixed term
We are delighted to offer an opportunity for a highly motivated, ambitious individual to join the General Surgical team at Barts Health NHS Trust (Whipps Cross Hospital). The post holder will also be involved in the General Surgery service provided at Whipps Cross Hospital and will be part of the 9 member Surgical team covering the hospitals non-elective and elective patients across the day case, endoscopy, benign and colorectal specialities. Successful candidates will also take part in the surgery on call rota with a 1 in 6 frequency Surgeon of the Week and 1:8 Surgeon of the Week end
It is an exciting time to join the General surgery team as there are plans to build a new hospital and develops new pathways in conjunction with opening a new Surgical Assessment Unit. Candidates will be provided with great opportunities and facilities to develop their careers and interests. Applicants should be eligible for full registration with the General Medical Council and be on the specialist register and possess a CCT in General and Colorectal Surgery from the Royal College of Physicians or equivalent, or be within 5 months of obtaining it.
Main duties of the job
To work with the existing Upper GI Surgeon to further develop the complex benign Upper GI practice of Whips Cross
- To participate in the Hot Laparoscopic cholecystectomy list
- To contribute to the delivery of clinical service within the department of Upper GI, Colorectal and General Surgery at Whipps Cross Hospital (Barts Health NHS Trust)
- To undertake such administrative, managerial and other duties as are reasonably to be expected of a senior member of clinical staff.

Job responsibilities
The post-holder is required to have and maintain full registration with the General Medical Council. Medical Staff are advised to continue membership of one of the medical defence organisations.
- To share the running of the Barts Health General Surgery Service at WXH including in-patient and out-patient practice
- To undertake weekly outpatient clinics, endoscopy list and operating sessions and pre/post-operative ward rounds.
- To participate in the general surgery on-call rota
- To participate fully as a member of the benign multi-disciplinary team in the upper GI surgical specialty
- To deputise for and provide cover for leave for the other consultants as appropriate
- To assist in the development and evaluation of new procedures and keep appropriate records of data obtained, in accordance with the requirements of the ethics committee and the data protection act.
- To help developing the emergency surgery department

Qualifications
Essential
- MB BS, or equivalent FRCS or equivalent CCT (or within 6 months of date of interview
Desirable
- Higher degree e.g. MS/MD/PhD
Knowledge
Essential
- Widespread broad based knowledge of all aspects of General & upper GI Surgery
- Evidence of subspecialty knowledge of hepatobiliary surgery and benign upper GI
- Proven competency in emergency General Surgery
Desirable
- Proven clinical experience of bile duct exploration surgery
- Evidence of team working
Training Expected
Essential
- Higher Specialist Training in General & Upper GI Surgery. Evidence of sub-specialist training and competency in upper GI laparoscopic surgery.
- Experience in training undergraduates and postgraduates Evidence of formal educational training qualification
Desirable
- JAG accreditation in gastroscopies
- Robotic experience
