Job description
Job responsibilities

Applicants must be within 6 months of CCT or must have fully completed CESR application and be fully registered on the GMC Dermatology Specialist Register. Any applications not meeting these criteria will not be considered.

These are two substantive posts. The post holders will join a team of four Dermatology Consultants (2.6 WTE) and two full time Specialty Doctors working across the South Sites (Beckenham Beacon, The Princess Royal University Hospital & Orpington Hospital).

PURPOSE OF JOB

The posts are based at Beckenham Beacon. One post holder will also cover acute dermatology at Princess Royal University & Orpington Hospitals. Timetables may change to offer clinics at alternative sites within the trust according to departmental requirements. There is no on-call commitment.

There are two job plans, one of 8 Programmed Activities and one of 6 Programmed Activities. There is no on-call commitment. The job plans include general dermatology and 2 week wait skin cancer clinics, a surgical list, teledermatology, a weekly skin cancer MDT meeting and participation in departmental meetings. One post includes participation in a rota providing senior cover of ward referrals during normal working hours (supervising the clinical fellow). One post includes a biologics clinic; we are keen to recruit a colleague with an interest in this subspecialty. We would also welcome applicants with other subspecialty interests such as paediatric dermatology or skin surgery.

The job plans include Supporting Professional Activity time for revalidation and CPD activities. One post includes additional SPA time for one of the lead roles within the department. The lead roles include skin cancer lead, clinical governance lead and educational lead; taking on one of these roles can be negotiated for either post through the job planning process. If the appointees wish to work fewer PAs, this may be negotiated as part of the appointment process, although our strong preference would be to appoint someone to an 8PA post and a 6PA post.

General dermatology outpatient clinic templates typically comprise 5 new patients and a maximum of 8 follow up patients. Two-week wait skin cancer clinic templates typically comprise 10 new patients and up to 4 follow-up patients. The department aims to conduct skin cancer clinics on a see and treat model, and nurses are being training in procedures such as skin biopsy to facilitate this. Theatre lists include five or six procedures (depending on the complexity of the cases). Acute dermatology inpatient referrals are usually 0-3 per day, many of which are managed remotely via teledermatology. Dermatology does not have inpatient beds, so patients are under named consultants from other teams (e.g. general medicine). The department operates a rota system for ward referrals (daily 9-5 Mon-Fri) and 3 ward vists per week, as required. There is no out-of-hours on-call commitment with this post.

There is a weekly skin cancer multidisciplinary meeting from 1-2pm every Thursday. We also hold a monthly combined clinic for complex skin cancer cases, with representation from dermatology, maxillofacial surgery and oncology.

There is a monthly SE Thames Regional Dermatology Meeting at Denmark Hill (although on some months there is a similar clinic held at Beckenham Beacon). This session covers difficult diagnostic and management problems for patients who come to the regional clinic.

All employees are expected to be prepared to undertake work on any of the Trusts sites as required by the service. As a senior employee of the Trust you will work in close co-operation with, and support other clinical, medical professional and managerial colleagues in providing high quality healthcare to the Trusts patients. Integral to these responsibilities is the following: -

  • The provision of a first-class clinical service
  • Effective leadership to all staff engaged in the specialty
  • Sustaining and developing teaching and research in conjunction with Kings College London / KHP
  • Undertaking all work in accordance with the Trusts procedures and operating policies
  • Conducting clinical practice in accordance with contractual requirements and within the parameters of the Trusts service plans
  • Maintaining the confidence of business plans and development strategies formulated for the specialty, the Division or the Trust
