The position described in this Job Description for full a full time Consultant Physician in Gastroenterology based at Northampton General Hospital NHS Trust.
This post is part of the further development of the Medicine Division at Northampton. This has included the building of a new clinician designed Acute Assessment hub for emergency admissions in 2018 and strengthening the specialist services supporting this.
The successful candidate will join the existing team of six Consultant Gastroenterologists and two Locum Gastroenterologists, with this post further enhancing the existing level of specialty expertise and allow further development of gastroenterology and endoscopy services in the hospital and wider South Northamptonshire area.
The appointee will be expected to deliver outpatient gastroenterology care to our local patients through regular clinics, currently based within the hospital and a nearby community hospital at Daventry. As our local STP develops they should be prepared to deliver this care flexibly and in line with the growth of more community based care for chronic conditions. They will be supported in this outpatient care by a comprehensive team of specialist nurses.
Main duties of the job
Job Purpose: This is a post to increase provision of gastroenterology services resulting in seven full time gastroenterologists. This enables the service to provide a daily GI opinion to the admissions units, gastroenterology ward, selecting appropriate patients for our ward and discharging patients for OPD management.

Kettering General Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (KGH) is an acute hospital with around 600 beds and a 24-hour Emergency Department (A&E). In addition to the full range of district general hospital care, KGH also provides some specialist services including cardiac care for the county. It has inpatient, day case, diagnostic, maternity and outpatient facilities with a dedicated children’s ward and outpatients. In 2019/20 teams at the KGH site cared for approximately 90,000 emergency patients and 120,000 patients referred to us for treatment.

In addition to the full range of district general hospital care, NGH also provides some specialist services including cancer and stroke services for the county. In 2019/20 teams at NGH cared for approximately 135,000 emergency patients and 140,000 patients were referred to us for treatment.
