Job overview

The Wellington Eye Centre is looking for a fully qualified ophthalmologist to join him, with a view to eventually taking over the day to day running of the practice. There would be the opportunity to become a shareholder in the practice although this is not a requirement for any appointee. Ideally, the appointee would have experience in corneal and anterior segment surgery and have an active interest in laser refractive surgery, as this constitutes the bulk of the work we perform. However, this not an absolute requirement and the position could suit a comprehensive ophthalmologist with experience in performing laser refractive surgery including SMILE, LASIK and PRK. Remuneration will be negotiable depending on experience and familiarity with the scope of work involved at the Eye Centre. The successful applicant would need to be able and willing to obtain registration as a specialist ophthalmologist in New Zealand.

Organisation information

The Wellington Eye Centre specialises in management of corneal and anterior segment conditions, with a significant volume of keratoconus patients, and in corneal refractive surgery. The scope of practice at the Eye Centre could widen with additional medical staff. The Eye Centre has a comprehensive suite of equipment and technology for managing corneal and refractive patients and has pioneered many of the most important advances in anterior segment and refractive surgery in New Zealand. Practice equipment includes:  Carl Zeiss Meditec MEL90 excimer laser and Carl Zeiss Meditec Visumax 800 femtosecond laser,  Pentacam tomographer and Corvis device, Zeiss Cirrus 6000 OCT, Zeiss IOL Master 700 biometer, Nidek Confocal microscope, Avedro Mosaic customised corneal cross linker and E>Eye IPL device

Applicant Requirements

Procedures carried out at the practice include LASIK, SMILE and PRK, Corneal collagen cross linking and intracorneal rig segment implantation. Because of the volume of work involving laser refractive surgery, the practice is not currently offering intraocular surgery such as cataract or keratoplasty procedures. However a suitable applicant would rapidly be able to re-establish these procedures in the practice.

The Eye Centre staff include one ophthalmologist, an optometrist, 3 technicians, a practice manager, practice nurse, receptionist and a refractive surgery coordinator.

The appointee will be expected to work independently but may be required to undertake supervision as part of the process of obtaining medical registration in New Zealand.
