Position Summary

To provide academic leadership for the clinical groups making up Wales Anaesthesia (POWH Anaesthesia, Pain Medicine, Peri-operative services and Hyperbaric Medicine) and to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team responsible for building a world class suite of services at the Randwick campus. 

The successful applicant will implement and oversee the research program in the relevant areas at the Randwick campus, take responsibility for both under-graduate and post-graduate teaching and act as the Australia and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists Local Scholar Role Tutor for trainees in Anaesthesia. 

The AH will undertake these activities in consultation with the Administrative Head of Wales Anaesthesia and the Wales Anaesthesia Executive Council (of which the successful applicant will be a member). The position will work collaboratively with the executive team and other departmental heads in the POW to ensure the delivery of a high-quality research support service from anaesthesia as required.  By working with colleagues across the SESLHD, the AH is also responsible for both building a strong research and teaching profile for the POW campus and fostering cross-department research projects.

The position is also responsible for maintaining strong working relationships in research and teaching with the nursing and allied health staff across the appropriate areas of responsibility and as manager for the research co-ordinator staff. 

The appointment will be for a fixed five-year term (recurrent by mutual agreement) and subject to yearly performance review by the Medical Co-Director of the Acute and Critical Complex Care Program (ACCC).

Key Performance Areas for this Position 

1.    EDUCATION AND TEACHING 

• Lead the supervision, support and training for registrars, JMO’s and students within the department.
• Create an environment that encourages adult learning and contemporary teaching principles.
• Teach junior staff and students; participate in learning activities and use appropriate teaching methods.
• Encourage higher learning within the discipline by supervising PhD and MMS students.

2.    RESEARCH

• Lead the department’s research agenda, and work with other senior staff to support the research agenda for the department.
• Lead and promote clinical and health research activities that enhance patient care as well as the reputation of the hospital and health service.
• Maintain and be informed of relevant new research which may impact on clinical management and ensure new research developments are translated into clinical management where relevant.
• Supervise the activity of the research co-ordinator(s) and support skill acquisition for those individuals, so as to enhance research capability.

3.    LEADERSHIP 

• Assist the Administrative Head in leading Wales Anaesthesia through the process of change to ensure a smooth transition during the redevelopment of operating theatres. 
• Support the Administrative Head to deliver on the vision for Wales Anaesthesia.
• Share leadership roles in Wales Anaesthesia by chairing relevant committee meetings and representing the department in any negotiations with the Clinical School, Faculty of Medicine, UNSW.
• Take on the role of Local Scholar Role Tutor for the Australia and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists with respect to the training curriculum requirements. 

4.    CLINICAL PRACTICE 

• Work collaboratively with members of Wales Anaesthesia to ensure high quality in-patient and outpatient anaesthesia care is delivered.
• Share on-call with other senior members of Wales Anaesthesia for after hours and weekend patient care (dependent on area of clinical practice undertaken by the successful candidate).

5.    QUALITY 

• Assist in the development of and participation in an appropriate quality and clinical governance program for medical staff within Wales Anaesthesia.
• Ensure quality improvement is incorporated into day-to-day practices. Develop a culture of evidence-based improvement.
• Work with other departments to ensure planning and policy development of research and teaching is contemporary and consistent with hospital and NSW Health policies.

6.    PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

• Participate in appropriate activities within Wales Anaesthesia and the POWH.
• Support an environment that encourages personal and professional development.

Performance Management:

The Head of Department will have an annual Performance Agreement with the Medical Co-Director of the ACCC 

Operational resources:

• Development of systems for the collection and reporting of statistics related to the performance of the unit in terms of academic output and teaching activity.
• Review and manage academic meetings within Wales Anaesthesia.
• Work with the POWH Foundation to manage the resources of the Wales Anaesthesia Research Fund (WARF)

Financial management:

• Actively manage research funds, advocate for resources to support academic and teaching activity.
• Responsible for continued funding of research co-ordinator position.

Human resource management:

• Maintain the senior and junior medical officers’ participation in clinical research.
• Develop employee capabilities, promote positive interpersonal relationships, teamwork and performance management.
• Undertake performance appraisals of Research Co-ordinator(s).
