Applications are invited for the post of Consultant in Paediatric Hepatology (10 PAs) within the Paediatric Liver, GI and Nutrition Centre at King's College Hospital.
The Paediatric Hepatology Service, established by the late Professor Alex Mowat in the 1970s and awarded supra-regional status by the Department of Health in 1986, is committed to providing patient centred quality clinical care underpinned by research and innovation.
The service is the largest in the UK and is part of the Child Health Clinical Academic Grouping (CAG) of King's Health Partners (KHP). Services are provided to patients across the UK and internationally. The department has strong links, both clinical and research, with the adult liver service.
Main duties of the job
The post will be based at King's College Hospital and the proposed Job Plan is attached. There will be an average of 8.5* Programmed Activities of Direct Clinical Care, with the remainder being allocated for Supporting Professional activities related to professional revalidation. The On-Call commitment is for a 1:7 rota which is classed as Category A. The post will contribute to the portal hypertension on call rota.
*Following work undertaken to transform the way clinical care is delivered at King's, all new consultant appointments will comprise 1.5 SPAs. 1 SPA is for activities relevant for appraisal and revalidation. 0.5 SPA is for particular interests such as Research or Teaching. The outputs of the 0.5 SPA will be reviewed by the Clinical Lead at 12-18 months.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The appointee will be expected to develop a research activity either in basic sciences or clinical hepatology and teaching. The post-holder will be based at Kings College Hospital/KHP. Office space and secretarial support will be provided at Kings College Hospital.

- To provide effective leadership of all staff engaged in the speciality.
- To provide paediatric advice to the Trusts on the basis of agreed protocols
- To provide outpatient services in paediatrics gastroenterology and develop liaison services in the region
- Shared responsibility with other colleagues for providing 24 hours, 7 days a week cover for the Unit on a rota basis. Responsible also for covering colleagues periods of annual leave and short-term sickness.
- Provide clinical supervision of junior medical/dental practitionersas a shared responsibility with other consultant colleagues.
- Responsible for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and contributing to CPD and clinical governance initiatives.
- Responsible for outpatient clinic commitments in peripheral hospitals as agreed with the Care Groups management team.
- Contribute to the Care Groups research interests in accordance with the Trusts R&D framework.
- Contribute to the audit programmes, Morbidity and Mortality, clinical governance programs and learning from Deaths.
- Take an active role in the formulation, implementation and monitoring of the Care Groups Business Plan. This may include assisting with discussions regarding service plans and developments with internal and external agencies.
- Conduct all activities within the contracted level of service and operating plan for service(s).
- Exercise professional leadership for all staff working in the specialty. This will include fostering and developing projects focused towards these ends and ensuring that the momentum of post-qualification professional education and other appropriate training is maintained.
- Work in conjunction with clinical and other professional colleagues to ensure that the productivity of staff within the specialty is maintained and their job satisfaction is enhanced. This may include involvement in the appraisal process for peers and/or junior colleagues.
- Undertake Care Group management duties as agreed with the Care Group/Departmental Manager/Clinical Director.
- Be aware of, and comply with, all Trust infection prevention and control policies, to include hand hygiene, personal hygiene, environmental and food hygiene.
- Prepare for and undertake the protective interventions that you are responsible for in a manner that is consistent with evidence-based practice and maintaining patient safety.
- You have a general duty of care for the health, safety and well-being of yourself, work colleagues, visitors and patients within the hospital in addition to any specific risk management or clinical governance responsibilities associated with this post.
- You are required to observe the rules, policies, procedures and standards of Kings College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust together with all relevant statutory and professional obligations, including complying with statutory and Trust core training.
- You are required to observe and maintain strict confidentiality of personal information relating to patients and staff.

- The postholder has an important responsibility for, and contribution to make to, infection control and must be familiar with the infection control and hygiene requirements of this role. These requirements are set out in the National Code of Practice on Infection Control and in local policies and procedures, which will be made clear during your induction and subsequent refresher training. These standards must be strictly complied with at all times.

- Registerable medical qualification MRCP, MRCPCH or equivalent
- Other higher degree or diploma (e.g., MD)
- Hold CCT in paediatric gastroenterology,hepatology and Nutrition or equivalent non UK training qualification; or alternatively will obtain within 6 months of interview date
- Name to be on Specialist Register on date of taking up appointment
Training and Experience
- CCT or equivalent in Paediatric Gastroenterology
- Wide experience in all aspects of paediatrics culminating in award of CCT or equivalent in paediatrics
- Training and experience in hepatology and transplantation
- Experience in day to day organisation of multidisciplinary services in a busy Teaching Hospital
- Familiar with current structure of Health Service and conversant with recent initiatives and changes
- Management course and/or qualification
- Thorough understanding of principles of medical audit
- Must have undertaken and completed audit projects
Research and Publications
- Experience of clinical research
- Relevant research experience in one or more aspects of paediatric hepatology
- Publication of relevant review articles or case reports
