Main duties of the job

There are approximately 190,000 attendances at the two Emergency Departments across the two sites.  We have 16.5 whole time equivalent Consultants providing shop floor cover five days a week at both sites from 8am to 10pm, and for 9 hours per day at weekends, with 24/7 on-call cover cross-site.

The Tunbridge Wells department has a 6-bed resus area, 14 Majors cubicles, an active UTC, and a 7 chaired CDU area. Furthermore, we have just opened a new Paediatric Emergency Department.  A 39 bed Medical Assessment Unit is on site which opened in 2016, led by Acute Physicians, with Ambulatory Care facilities.

At Maidstone there is a highly successful Urgent Medical and Ambulatory Unit, run by Acute Physicians, which opened in late 2012.  This comprises 8 ambulatory trolleys, taking direct Medical referrals, together with 14 short stay medical beds.

On-call, the post holder will need to reside within ten miles or thirty minutes of one of the hospitals.

Working for your organisation

The Trust provides acute hospital services to a population of over 460,000 in West Kent and North East Sussex, and some specialist services to a considerably larger population. Its major hospitals are the Tunbridge Wells Hospital at Pembury, and the Maidstone Hospital.

Tunbridge Wells Hospital opened in September 2011.  This 512 bed acute hospital is the first NHS hospital in which all wards are composed entirely of single side rooms.  The new facilities include a state-of-the-art Emergency Department, where we see around 100,000 new patients annually. The hospital has a full range of diagnostic services, and provides all acute medical, surgical, orthopaedic, and women’s and children’s specialties. Tunbridge Wells Hospital was successfully appointed a Regional Trauma Unit in 2012, and includes all trauma, surgical and Critical Care back-up services.

Maidstone Hospital is a modern 410 bed district general hospital.  It provides general hospital services to a catchment population of around 220,000.  The Emergency Department sees around 90,000 attendances a year.
