Lancashire Eye Centre are looking for a Consultant Ophthalmologist and Vitreoretinal Surgeon to join our recently expanded Ophthalmology Department.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will work alongside our current Vitreoretinal Surgeon in delivering tertiary level care of the highest clinical standard and share responsibility for managing all of the Trusts VR emergencies.

The successful applicant will:
  • Share responsibility for managing VR emergencies
  • Supervise, educate and support doctors in training and allied healthcare professionals
  • Help to develop and lead the subspecialty service, ensuring robust pathways are in place for a high quality, modern, patient experience
  • Supervise, train and mentor optometrists and orthoptists within the service.
  • Specifically adopt, in conjunction with colleagues, an active role in the planning, development and delivery of the Ophthalmology service for the
  • Provide direct input to patients; contribute to multidisciplinary teams and lead the co-ordination of care for patients within Preston and Chorley
  • Promote high professional standards of clinical care for patients, both through direct patient care and by the maintenance of continuing professional
  • Assume a continuous commitment for the care of patients, even if employed less than full-time and ensure that adequate arrangements are made for leave and off duty
  • Develop close links with General Practitioners operating in the
  • Exercise the freedom to develop specialist elements of the services to reflect perceived priorities within available


About us

The Ophthalmology department at Lancashire Teaching hospitals is a dynamic, progressive service which is based across 2 sites (Royal Preston Hospital and Chorley District Hospital).

Our primary location is the newly opened Lancashire Eye Centre situated in Chorley District Hospital. The Centre was funded through an 18 million investment and comprises a 3 storey build with modern, state of the art outpatient and day case facilities on one site. There are over 20 consulting rooms in outpatients and 3 modern spacious theatres. The unit is equipped with modern diagnostic facilities and infrastructure to provide high quality care.

A team of 11 Consultants deliver Ophthalmology services across both hospital sites and within a community setting. The department is supported by 1 Associate Specialist, 2 Specialty Doctors, 2 Specialist Registrars, 2 McH trainees and 2 Trust Grade doctors and a team of Orthoptists/Optometrists and 2 nurse practitioners. Our clinics are exclusively subspecialist, and we no longer have general clinics. We provide care for all major subspecialties including medical retina, vitreoretinal, neuro-ophthalmology, paediatrics, glaucoma, cornea, oculoplastics and orbital, cataract clinics, emergency ophthalmology.

  • Full GMC Registration and Licence to Practice
  • MBBS or equivalent

  • Must be entered on the Specialist Register (or entry within 6 months)
