Applicants are invited to apply for the position of Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine within Perioperative Medicine (POM) at St Bartholomew's Hospital (Barts Health NHS Trust).

St Bartholomew's Hospital has state-of-the-art facilities for the treatment of patients with cardiovascular disease, including 10 operating theatres, 10 catheter labs, 255 general cardiac beds, with 98 higher acuity care beds, including 56 critical care beds. The Thorax Centre provides multi-disciplinary care for patients with lung disease. In addition St Bartholomew's Hospital operates a large clinical service for patients with cancer, including haematological malignancy.

Main duties of the job

The Perioperative Medicine service at St Bartholomew's Hospital cares for over 2000 patients per year undergoing cardiac surgery and over 3000 patients per year in the 4 ICUs on the 1st and 6th floors of the KGV Building.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated individual to join the existing team of Consultants within Perioperative Medicine. The successful candidate will join the existing team based mainly in the 6th floor ICU at St Bartholomew's Hospital. The unit (6A) works alongside the 3 cardiothoracic ICUs on the first floor providing support to the whole of St Bartholomew's Hospital site, including extra corporeal cardiovascular and respiratory support.

Qualifications/Clinical Skills
Essential

  • GMC Registration
  • On GMC Specialist Register or, if in training within 6 months of CCT
  • Advanced training in Intensive Care Medicine
  • Experience of UK healthcare system

Desirable 

  • ALS/CALS
  • Postgraduate qualification in ICM (EDIC, DICM, FFICM)
  • CCT in Intensive Care Medicine

Special Knowledge/Abilities and/or Experience
Essential 

  • Proficient in relevant procedures such as vascular access, fibreoptic bronchoscopy
  • Training and experience in critical care
  • Experience in critical care follow-up
  • Experience in critical care outreach and advice/support
  • Experience in the perioperative care of patients including pain management

Desirable 

  • Sound understanding of training relationships within the programme
  • Ability to promote equality of opportunity in all aspects of medical education
  • Experience working across boundaries (e.g. between specialties, local and national education providers, and across professional groups
  • TOE/TTE Accreditation Ability to promote equality of opportunity in all aspects of medical education
  • Training and experience in ECMO

Teaching & Training
Essential 

  • Involvement in teaching junior medical staff, nurses and allied health professionals
  • Evidence of training in teaching skills

Desirable 

  • CALS, ATLS, ALS, APLS or PALS instructor status
  • Certificate of education
  • Involvement in undergraduate education
  • Experience in simulation training
  • Experience in delivering higher training in ICM

Research
Essential 

  • Published or submitted research

Desirable 

  • PhD/MD
  • GCP certified
  • Experience in large clinical trials
  • Established academic links and collaboration
  • Familiarity with translation of basic science research into clinical practise
