To be responsible, with Emergency Department (ED) Senior colleagues, for the reception, resuscitation, diagnosis and emergency treatment of patients attending the ED. The responsibility for patients accepted by non-ED on call teams from General Practitioners currently rests with those teams. ED doctors have historically offered support for these teams where possible.

To supervise the appropriate referral of patients

  • Non-ED specialist teams (within the Trust or tertiary referral where necessary)
  • General Practice and other community-based

To ensure, with ED Senior colleagues, that the ED provides an effective service 24 hours a day, 7 days a week within national and local standards. This currently would mean participating in the 16 slot middle grade tier working 1:4 weekends.

It is expected that the appointee will join in the running of Review Clinics in the Department, and share the management of patients under the care of the Emergency Medicine Consultants on the Emergency Floor and help achieve national key performance indicators for Emergency Care.

Main duties of the job

This post is based at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary right in the heart of the city of Lancaster within easy reach of the English Lakes District. There are increasing academic links between the Trust and the 2 local universities. Road and rail communications to the rest of England, Scotland and Wales are good, with Lancaster served by the main West Coast railway line. Other major cities are in easy reach by train or car.

There is a large choice of local primary schools with very good OFSTED reports along-with excellent secondary schools, including a choice of state schools ranked amongst the best in the country, and the prestigious Lancaster Boys and Lancaster Girls grammar schools.

A vast range of outdoor pursuits are available including close proximity to the Lake District, the coast of Morecambe Bay, Forest of Bowland, The Pennines, and activities on rivers and sea. The area is well served with sporting facilities, clubs and opportunities, including all weather pitches and indoor facilities provided by the local authority, universities, local colleges and schools.

The appointment will be 10 PA's plus the option of up to an additional 2 PA's, which are likely to require additional out of hours working commitment. Holidays are agreed within the team as per the departmental holiday rules.

1.5 of the PAs is allocated as SPA time, 0.5 of which may be worked off site, by prior agreement.

About us

We operate from three main hospitals - Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community health care premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.

FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.

WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.

All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.

Our community services for adults are provided in people's homes, community centres, clinics, GP Practices, community hospitals and our main hospitals. Our aim is to work with people to help them remain independent, improve their health and manage their conditions through high quality care, advice and support.
