We are currently rebuilding our substantive Geriatric Consultant team, which you could be part of. This is a great opportunity for consultants who hold a CCT to start immediately with a view to becoming substantive. We will also welcome applications from non-CCT doctors and we will provide the opportunity of support with your CESR application or other educational requirements. We offer opportunities to work in sub specialist interests, which will be discussed with you at interview.

  • In addition to your salary, we are offering an additional 5,000 payment for each of year of tenure - up to a maximum of two years.

Main duties of the job

We are one of the largest Acute trusts in the UK with specialist services in Acute frailty, virtual ward, falls, dementia and orthogeriatric.

As part of an investment to improve and develop our geriatric/ frailty facilities within the Trust, we are looking for enthusiastic innovative professionals to be part of the journey to lead and shape our team, so we can succeed in becoming one of the best Geriatric units in the country.

Joining as a consultant in BHRUT, you will play a crucial role in delivering success across the Clinical Group which consists of 8 Acute Elderly wards and 2 frailty units.

The post holder will have a base ward, in one of the Acute Elderly Units, and will be supported and responsible for the supervision of junior medical staff including trainees. The successful post holder will be supported to undertake formal training in educational supervision.

In addition to acute elderly ward, the successful post holder will also participate in the Acute Frailty Unit to deliver early comprehensive geriatric assessments and management of our elderly care admissions to ED.

The Geriatrics Division has undergone major transformation over the last few years. Service transformation and innovation works are continuing, and we are striving to give the best care available nationally to our expanding, and increasingly elderly population. You will be expected to integrate within the team of existing consultant staff in order to provide excellent quality care to all patients and to provide specialist cover for inpatients as well as older patients in the community.

The Geriatrics and Frailty Division currently manage approximately 240 beds across Queens and King George Hospital and the Trust discharges approximately 1,600 patients from our Elderly Care Wards per year across both sites.

Job description
Job responsibilities

The Acute Frailty Unit functions as a medical assessment unit specific for older patients. There is a full dedicated MDT and junior medical support. There is a morning and afternoon MDT board round handover, followed by medical review of frailty unit patients. All patients on the frailty unit have their care led by the geriatricians on duty and specialist referrals are well serviced by visiting specialties including cardiology, haematology, etc as needed.

The post holder will contribute to the development of the Frailty Service, establishing an effective multi-disciplinary team, to provide early comprehensive geriatric assessment and management to meet the needs of frail older patients at BHRUT.

The post holder will build on the existing good relationships with primary and community care services, in order to identify risk factors for our frail and elderly patients, to be signposted to services that will support them to maintain their independence.

The job plan is anticipated to contain 10.6 Programmed Activities per week, consisting of 7.85 DCC + 2.75 SPA. There is also a 1:8 weekend commitment and the hours are resident Saturday 08.00 20.00 and Sunday 08.00 16.00. The consultant will be given 1 day off in lieu post weekend working. The out of hours commitment (weekdays and weekends) is remunerated additionally as 1 PA.

Qualifications
Essential

  • Sufficient experience at consultant level working in Medicine
  • Full registration with the General Medical
  • Completion of 12 years Medical work since obtaining primary Medical Qualification

Desirable

  • Presentations or papers in Geriatrics and Frailty or sub specialty
  • Shows ability to work with and lead others across professions
  • Development of evaluations / audit /protocols / clinical improvement initiatives
