The Acute Medicine Unit & SDEC at Furness General Hospital prides itself as a Centre of Diagnostic Excellence. Patients are managed effectively and efficiently. This is due to the ethos of the team and the presence of senior clinical decision makers throughout the day.

This post offers the successful candidate an opportunity to contribute to the further development of a well-established service. The post will suit candidates who are passionate about diagnostic accuracy, are motivated to partake in an acute service and can make sound clinical decisions.

We stream medical patients directly into our SDEC, from Primary Care and the Emergency Department. The successful candidate will provide services on the Acute Medicine Unit and SDEC.

Our SDEC provides a comprehensive service aided by our excellent relationship with general internal medicine specialties, pharmacy, and radiology. Complex medical diagnoses can be established and then referred to the relevant specialty for continuing care.

There is an emphasis on the ability of the team members to excel as General Internal Medicine Physicians.

Working hours: 10PAs divided into 8PA DCC, 1.5 SPA, 0.5 Admin. 1 additional PA will be provided for on call and supplement. Additional roles can be negotiated in addition to basic PA's.

Main duties of the job

The Acute Medicine division is comprised of a 20 bedded Acute Medical Unit (8 side rooms) and an adjoining SDEC.

The team is assisted by the on-call consultant, ST3+ on call for medicine and intermediate grade doctors on call for medicine.

We have successfully reduced admissions and shortened lengths of stay. Our philosophy is one of ensuring safe good quality care in a friendly and supportive professional department.

The successful candidate(s) with a CCT in GIM with another specialty have the opportunity to have a joint job plan designed for them to accommodate the continued practice in both specialties, Acute Medicine and their parent specialty.

The successful candidate will: 

  • Be dedicated to hands-on involvement with medical admissions to the Acute Medicine Unit focusing on timely assessment, management and discharge
  • Supervise junior doctors, ANPs & nurse consultants seeing patients in our medical SDEC & on AMU
  • Supervise & co-ordinate junior doctors on AMU
  • Teach & train undergraduate medical students & junior doctors
  • Provide leadership & work as part of our team
  • Be part of the on-call team 

The appointment will be for 10 programmed activity sessions which will be divided into 8 PAs as Direct Clinical Care, 1.5 SPAs and 0.5 PAs as admin time. Part-time applicants will have their PAs adjusted pro rata and additional sessions/ on call to be discussed.

We have an active program to develop Advanced Nurse Practitioners who remain as part of the permanent staff and are embedded in the culture of the team. Trainee doctors are usually pleasantly surprised at the efficiency of care and varied pathology encountered on the Acute Medical Unit & SDEC at Furness General Hospital.

Education and qualifications
Essential 

  • Full registration with the General Medical Council (with a licence to practice)
  • Current MRCP(UK) qualification, or equivalent
  • Certificate of Completion in Specialist Training (CCT) or within 6 months of completion of training at the time of interview
  • oO r Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR), or
  • or European Community Rights

Desirable 

  • Substantial (5 years+) Acute internal Medical experience
  • Specialty Certificate Examinations in Acute Internal Medicine
