The Education Academy within Barts Health is expanding in response to the need with increasing numbers of students and trainees and commitment to offer the best educational experience for our trainees. There is a real need to ensure that students receive excellent tuition and that trainees have the best possible educational supervision. In line with our Education Strategy, we intend to improve education by building an Education Fellow faculty base made up of Specialty Teaching Fellows who contribute to both undergraduate and postgraduate training and support Inter-professional Innovations.

Barts Health Simulation Service has four dedicated Simulation and Essential Clinical Skills Centres based at Newham University Hospital, Whipps Cross University Hospital, St Bartholomew's and the Royal London. Each of these centres has a proud history of being innovative and award winning. These departments are teaching areas with fully equipped simulation and clinical skills teaching and Haptic Clinical Skills facilities.

The post holder will have the opportunity to work across sites with other education fellows. All fellows joining our team will be encouraged to undertake a PG Cert in Education and funding will be available towards supporting this

Main duties of the job

We are currently looking to recruit to this new post and would consider FY3 up to St3 level into this 1.0 WTE post. The post holder will spend two days a week (0.4 WTE) within the Royal London Simulation centre developing and delivering a wide range of educational activities to mainly post graduate medical trainees through various modalities including clinical skills, full immersion simulation and Haptics based simulation. The post will have opportunities to be involved in other teaching programmes including undergraduate medical trainees, Foundation Trainees, and interdisciplinary simulation training.

The post holder will have the opportunity to work across sites with other education fellows. All fellows joining our team will be invited to join our Education Forum where fellows have access to a structured development programme. All our fellows are encouraged to undertake a PG Cert in Education and funding will be available towards supporting this.

The post holder would be responsible for their own personal development plan, with regards to both service and educational work. Regular appraisal must be undertaken with their clinical supervisor and Simulation Lead Specialist. The post holder will work closely with the Associate Director of Simulation to identify Educational Deliverables.

The post is covered by the Terms and Conditions of Service of Hospital Medical and Dental Staff (England and Wales), as amended from time to time

Job responsibilities

The post holder will be asked at times to support delivery of this training across site as needed, but their main base will be the Royal London Simulation Centre. The other 3.0 days a week (0.6TWE) of this post will be clinically based. The applicant must be a fully registered medical practitioner with a licence to practice. The Clinical element of this post will be undertaken at the Royal London site. NHS clinical experience is essential.

The other day will be spent developing the Haptic and Clinical Skills facility and Simulation based learning opportunities for orthopaedic trainees across Barts Health. The post holder will be asked at times to support delivery of this training at the Newham and Whipps Cross Site as needed, but their main base will be the Royal London Simulation Centre.

This is a 12 month post starting in August 2023 and aimed at those who wish to build on their personal teaching experience to develop expertise in educational theory and practice within the exciting field of simulation. Training and support will be given in this simulation post. There will be an expectation of participation in project work alongside encouragement and practical help to produce presentations or publications whilst in post.
