Head of Bristol Medical School

The University of Bristol is seeking to appoint a new Head of Bristol Medical School, to provide inspirational leadership to the School and its staff, students and partners, enabling the School to develop further its excellent education and research.

Bristol Medical School is the largest and one of the most diverse Schools in the University of Bristol, and is a leading centre for research and teaching. Research in the School is collaborative and multi-disciplinary, with staff coming from a wide range of academic disciplines and clinical specialties. The 2021 Research Excellence Framework (REF) confirmed the University of Bristol’s position as a leading centre for health research. The Medical School has responsibility for the undergraduate medical (MBChB) programme.  Undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes within the School provide training and career development for undergraduate and intercalating medical students, academic clinical trainees, other clinicians, and research staff.

This role is a key academic leadership position within the Faculty, supporting the attainment of the University’s vision and overall objectives, and participating in the collective formulation and delivery of the Faculty and University’s academic strategy. The Head of School will have a strategic vision for the School, as well as for the School’s role within the University, the city region, the UK and internationally. They will have a deep commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion, and understand and be ready to champion the benefits of diversifying the current and future pipeline of talent across the School. With a track record of excellent partnership working – both internally, with academic and professional services staff, and externally with NHS partners - they will be able to lead on and drive forward change within the School and the wider Faculty and University.

To be successful in this role, you will have a recognised and strong leadership track record. You will be expected to demonstrate academic standing commensurate with senior professorial status in an area that is related to one or more of the disciplines within the School, and have demonstrated capability of inspiring respect and engendering confidence amongst colleagues.

With a PhD or equivalent experience, you must be able to demonstrate motivational leadership and team-building skills and an ability to contribute to a team of senior colleagues. You must have excellent organisational, management and administrative skills, and have sufficient experience and expertise to effectively manage the broad scope of the School’s research and educational activities.

An active willingness to build networks and exchange knowledge is vital for this role, along with a desire to work collaboratively with internal and external partners. Being a consultant level clinician is desirable for the role and it is essential you are able to demonstrate successful experience of working in partnership with NHS Trusts in a leadership capacity in relation to education and research.  You will also have academic credibility within your discipline, in line with the role profile for a Chair at the University of Bristol, as well as being a credible senior leader in an academic institution.

This role offers a unique opportunity for someone with a strong leadership track record to provide strategic vision and ambition in line with the Faculty and University strategy.
