Consultant in Perinatal Psychiatry (Lewisham) - 8PAs - Permanent

An exciting opportunity has risen for a substantive, 8-PA consultant psychiatrist post in the Lewisham Perinatal Community Mental Health Service. The successful candidate will work with other members of the specialist Lewisham perinatal service team to deliver high quality, safe, evidence-based care and to support service innovations, quality improvements and clinical research in perinatal psychiatry within SLaM, sharing strong clinical leadership within the team.

This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and committed consultant psychiatrist to work in a specialist perinatal service, providing flexible clinical leadership and consultant responsibility and working closely with other members of the multidisciplinary team including an existing consultant. The post holder will provide clinical work specifically in the Lewisham Perinatal Community Mental Health Service in the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM).

Main duties of the job

  • To Provide Clinical Leadership and Consultant input into the Southwark Perinatal team
  • To take consultant responsibility for Community/Liaison Perinatal Team patients, assessing or supervising assessment of patients and devising or helping to devise appropriate treatment plans and medication regimes and providing prompt medical response for those patients under their direct care and advise and work closely with other members of the MDT.
  • Reviewing patients on the case load on a regular basis.
  • To provide intensive and expert intervention and management of acutely ill patients under the care of the team.
  • To work flexibly with the other consultants across the boroughs to ensure good transitions of care for patients delivering at Kings College Hospital and living in the boroughs of Lambeth, Southwark , Lewisham.
  • To offer expert risk assessment and management skills
  • To work flexibly and creatively as part of a multidisciplinary team promoting informed risk taking and anti-discriminatory practice
  • To deliver Service Line management working with the team leader, Clinical Service Lead and Clinical Lead
  • Liaison with/advice to General Practitioners concerning service users subject to CPA.
  • To maintain help to address clinical governance issues within the Community Perinatal Service and work alongside national standards for these service.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • To manage, appraise and give professional supervision to junior medical staff as agreed between consultant colleagues and the Medical Director and in accordance with the Trust’s personnel policies and procedures.
  • To ensure that junior medical staff working with the post holder operate within the parameters of the New Deal and are Working Time Directive compliant.
  • To record clinical activity accurately and comprehensively using Slam’s ePJS (electronic patient journey system).
  • To undertake the administrative duties and record keeping associated with the care of patients.
  • To carry a mobile smart phone during work hours provided and paid for by the service, and be contactable by members of the team or other colleagues by phone and email.
  • To work flexibly and creatively as part of a multidisciplinary team promoting informed risk taking and anti-discriminatory practice.
  • To work flexibly with other teams in the associated acute trusts, with GPs and statutory services, and across SLaM and other mental health trusts, to ensure good coordination of care
  • To communicate clearly and effectively with staff of all major disciplines concerned with the provision of mental health care.
  • To participate in service and business planning activity for the locality and, as appropriate, for the whole mental health service.
  • To participate in annual appraisal for consultants.
  • To attend and participate in the academic programme of the Trust, including lectures and seminars as part of the internal CPD programme.
  • To maintain professional registration with the General Medical Council, Mental Health Act Section 12(2) approval, and to abide by professional codes of conduct.
  • To participate annually in a job plan review with the clinical manager, which will include consultation with a relevant service manager in order to ensure that the post is developed to take into account changes in service configuration and delivery associated with modernisation.
  • To work with local managers and professional colleagues in ensuring the efficient running of services, and share with consultant colleagues in the medical contribution to management.
  • To comply with the Trust’s agreed policies, procedures, standing orders and financial instructions, and to take an active role in the financial management of the service and support the Medical Director and other managers in preparing plans for services.
