This role will enable you to support the Paediatric teams looking after a wider variety of medical conditions whilst building on experience in paediatrics and developing your clinical skills. This post will be for 6 months initially with the possibility of a further 6 months.
Main duties of the job
It is expected that the post holder will provide support and contribute to the provision of general paediatric and neonatal care. The opportunities and experiences will be tailored to the seniority and training needs of the post holder. They will be encouraged and supervised to lead ward rounds and will have regular supervised outpatient clinics. There will also be the opportunity to develop roles in management, education and clinical governance.
There is a significant educational component to the post, and post holders will be expected to undergoappraisal and fulfil educational objectives as jointly determined with allocated educational supervisors.
The post-holder will participate in a full shift working pattern based on a seven-week cycle, including resident nights. A consultant will be available at all times for support and advice. Each middle grade post is 'New Deal' compliant with an average working week of 48 hrs. Annual and study leave is co-ordinated by the leave co-ordinator
The two main hospitals, Royal Hampshire County Hospital and North Hampshire Hospital provide both acute paediatric and Level 2 neonatal services.
The children's wards look after children aged 0-16 years and provide inpatient care for a range of specialties including medical, surgical, ENT and orthopaedic admissions and on the North Hampshire site there is also an adolescent unit. There are appropriate facilities to provide high dependency care and arrangements to support intensive care prior to transfer to the regional PICU.
Paediatric Assessment Units - are adjacent to the main paediatric wards. Local GPs have immediate access to an expert Paediatric opinion on any child requiring urgent assessment.
Outpatients - are adjacent to each paediatric ward with approximately 30,000 attendances / year. There are daily general paediatric clinics, special interest clinics plus visiting specialist clinics in cardiology, neurology, nephrology, endocrinology, genetics, cystic fibrosis, and surgery. The department actively participates in all the relevant regional specialty
Neonatal Care - Level 2 neonatal intensive care is provided as part of the South Central Neonatal Network. Infants of lower gestation and those requiring paediatric surgery or cardiology investigations are transferred to the local level 3 units at Southampton or Portsmouth. Training & Qualifications
- MB ChB or equivalent
- Full registration with GMC
- APLS or equivalent AND NLS
- Basic training in general Paediatrics & Neonates
- At least 2 years' experience in Paediatrics including 6 months in Neonates
- Previous experience working at middle grade
- Experience in outpatient & Community Paediatrics
- At least 6 months experience of working in the NHS
- Ability to communicate effectively with children, parents and staff
- Ability to work with and lead a team
- Understanding the importance of multi-disciplinary working in delivery of patients care
- Demonstrate participation in audit and research
- Demonstrate ability to manage change and an understanding of the principles of service improvement
- Ability to travel to and from the hospital for the purposes of fulfilling job requirements
