Job Details

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a full time Specialty Doctor post to join our Mental Health Services for Older People (MHSOP) REACT high intensity home treatment and crisis service.

The Mental Health Services for Older People Directorate is responsible for providing care to an elderly population of circa 81,645 persons over the age of 65 in Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan figure .The Directorate focuses its services on patients who experience the first onset of severe mental illness after the age of 65 and patients of any age with an established diagnosis of dementia associated with significant behavioural or psychiatric symptoms

Services are organised within three localities - Cardiff North & West, Cardiff South and the Vale of Glamorgan. Each area has its own Community Mental Health Team for Older People.

Hospital based facilities are currently (*) provided at:

  • University Hospital Llandough,
  • Barry Hospital, where there is a 14-bed challenging behaviour Young Onset Dementia ward spread over three units.
  • Grand Avenue, where there is an integrated Local Authority & health Tier 2 day service

In addition there are also well developed Liaison Old Age Psychiatry Services both for District General Hospitals & Care Homes, a Community REACT (crisis & out of hours) Service & a Younger Onset Dementia Service. We also have a well-developed in-patient Salaried GP service providing routine and urgent medical & physical care for all patients in the service.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will need to be able to work closely with and on behalf of the Consultant Old Age Psychiatrist for the REACT Team, within the Mental Health Services for Older People Directorate of the Mental Health Clinical Board.

The work will consist of assessments of emergency, urgent and routine psychiatric patients, together with on-going care under the supervision of the Consultant, involving a spectrum of activities including history taking, assessment of mental states, on-going record keeping, dictation of transfer/discharge summaries and outpatients follow up clinics. A significant amount of work is likely to be involved with patients who have been or need to be detained under the Mental Health Act. The postholder will be required to have regular attendance at multi-disciplinary team meetings, as well as the availability to carry out home-based assessments with or without other members of the CMHT for Older People & Community REACT Service

Person Specification
QUALIFICATIONS
Essential

  • MB BS or recognised equivalent
  • Full GMC Registration with a Licence to Practice

Desirable

  • Academic excellence (prizes, merits, distinctions etc.)
  • Section 12 (2) recognition under MHA 1983 or qualification to become Section 12 approved
  • Experience in working in mental health services in UK.

EXPERIENCE
Essential

  • Four years full-time postgraduate training (or part-time equivalent), at least two of which will be in a specialty training programme in a relevant specialty or as fixed-term specialty trainee in a relevant specialty, OR equivalent experience / competencies*
  • Experience of working in mental health services in UK.

Desirable

  • MRCPsych

SKILLS KNOWLEDGE ABILITY
Essential

  • Commitment to team approach and multi-disciplinary working
  • Effective communication skills
  • Understanding of clinical risk management and clinical governance
  • Ability to take independent clinical decisions when necessary and to seek advice from senior doctors as appropriate
