Job Details
This position of Locum Consultant in Ophthalmologist has arisen for 12 months due to maternity cover.
Main duties of the job
This is a full time post consisting of ten sessions per week (please refer to the Welsh Consultants' contract for precise contractual details). The on-call rota will be a maximum frequency of 1:8 and the rota is arranged over a weekly cycle. The on call is two tier with a junior doctor first on call. The post attracts payments at intensity band 1. There will be dedicated secretarial/admin support.
The fixed sessions will include four clinics (specialist/general - split subject to clinical need) and 2 theatre sessions. The theatre sessions will be used for a combination of cataract and sub-specialty procedures. The theatre sessions have senior anaesthetic cover.
The remaining flexible sessions would be used to support professional development, teaching, research, clinical governance, patient administration and to cover on-call commitments. Mentoring will be available to newly appointed consultants.
Annual leave and study leave/ professional leave will be provided in accordance with the Welsh Consultant contract.

A full programme of activities is held in the Postgraduate Medical Centre at Glan Clwyd Hospital, including evening lectures (during winter/spring) and combined rounds, which are held throughout the year. The programme also includes staff clinical conferences, tutorials, discussion and journal club meetings and symposiums. A comprehensive and up to date medical library has been developed together with a first class inter-library exchange system.
Training
Glan Clwyd benefits from the North Wales Clinical School being on the YGC site. We train medical students from Cardiff and Manchester, some of whom come to do special study modules. Our ophthalmic trainees enjoy a high success rate in professional exams thanks to excellent preparation by a core group of enthusiastic consultant teachers. We currently have 3 trainees from the Welsh rotation at St1, St2 and St3 levels and 1 trainee on the Dual Sponsorship Scheme.

- Name on Specialist Register OR proof of eligibility of entry onto Specialist Register OR within six months of obtaining a CCT at the time of the interview.
