Job Details

The Gastroenterology Service at Daisy Hill Hospital is currently provided by 3 gastroenterologists. These 2 new posts will expand that workforce to 5 to allow for greater provision of General Medicine and Gastroenterology. Both posts are for General luminal Gastroenterology. The Trust currently has waiting list pressures for OP ERCP as well as difficulties providing an emergency inpatient ERCP service. An interest in ERCP would be desirable for one post; any subspecialty interest would be accommodated for the second post. Current subspecialty interests in the Department include IBD, therapeutic endoscopy and BCS colonoscopy provision. There are plans to develop a cross-site Gastroenterologist of the Week system pending further appointments to the service. The service is supported by a Gastroenterology SpR and two SAS Grade doctors. We have also recently appointed a Physician Associate with an interest in Gastroenterology who contributes to the paracentesis service via DAU and will commence the Fibroscan Service in early 2021. We are developing dedicated therapeutic Upper and Lower GI lists in DHH to allow a protected service for high risk patients and a focused training environment for trainees.

The Trust is currently reviewing its upper GI bleeding service and there is the potential that the post holder may be required to contribute towards this.

General Medicine

Approximately 5600 medical cases were admitted over the last 12 months in line with a year on year increase in referrals over the last decade. The appointee will be expected to have broad experience and training in internal medicine and to take part in the acute general medical rota.

During covid, the Medical Department changed to a ‘physician of the week’ model and it is expected that this model will continue post-covid on a 1 in 4 basis (maximum number of in-patients when on wards is expected to be 20).  On-call is currently 1 in 8 Monday to Thursday and 1 in 12 at weekends (Friday-Sunday).  A Post-take Ward Round is performed on Saturday and Sunday mornings. The Department is actively looking at having 2 Medical Consultants available at weekends to improve patient safety during this period. It is expected that the eventual weekend on call frequency will be 1 in 8.The successful applicants will have shared office accommodation with full access to a personal computer and all necessary IT services.  Appropriate secretarial support will also be provided.

Office facilities and secretarial support will be provided within the Directorate.
