We are seeking a Locum Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with a specialist interest in Trauma Surgery, to join our team of 18 Trauma Consultants.

The successful appointee will perform trauma surgery at Royal Preston Hospital. As a Major Trauma Centre, trauma surgery at Royal Preston Hospital includes general and major trauma cases.

Spinal trauma is managed by the Orthopaedic Spinal surgeons and Neurosurgeons. The Major Trauma Centre at Royal Preston Hospital delivers the Major Trauma Service for Lancashire and South Cumbria. In Orthopaedics, delivery of acute trauma care is via a Trauma Week system.

Main duties of the job

The successful appointee will perform trauma surgery at Royal Preston Hospital. As a Major Trauma Centre, trauma surgery at Royal Preston Hospital includes general and major trauma cases. Spinal trauma is managed by the Orthopaedic Spinal surgeons and Neurosurgeons.

The Trauma Week model involves 2 Consultants working in pairs and undertaking one of two fixed cycles, designated Week 1 and Week 2. There are currently 18 Trauma Consultants on this cycle, operating a paired 1:8 rota, with some of the more senior consultants undertaking fewer on call activities. Surgeons who are not on the cycle will perform trauma surgery in their subspecialty when the opportunity arises

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential 

 

  • Full GMC Registration and Licence to Practice
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • FRCS (Trauma & Ortho) or equivalent
  • On the GMC specialist register or within six months of being admitted to the register if currently in a training programme within the UK, i.e. within six months of expected CCT date at the date of AAC

Experience and Skills
Essential 

  • Wide range of experience in orthopaedic trauma
  • Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining a UK CCT in orthopaedics
  • Valid ATLS certificate
  • Evidence of suitable logbook experience in Trauma Surgery

Desirable 

  • Evidence of a Trauma Subspecialty interest

  • Evidence of commitment to audit and improving clinical practice/service development

Desirable 

  • Evidence of training in leadership
