The successful candidate will be expected to work at the Registrar level, supporting Junior trainee colleagues and will also provide on call Surgical cover during the day/night when on call. The appointee will be supported and supervised by Associate Specialists and Consultants. Nevertheless expected to make independent surgical decisions.

The successful appointee will be assisting with the day to day running of the wards, assisting and performing in theatre sessions, Out Patient clinics and arranging admission and discharges under Consultant supervision. A ward round will be conducted each morning with junior staff, which will incorporate the management of Surgical emergencies admitted the previous night under the General Surgeons, as well as incumbent patients.

Continue to develop in General Surgery taking part in middle grade full shift surgical rota.

The appointee will undertake the routine and emergency care of Surgical patients. The post will give plenty of opportunities for learning Advanced Surgical procedures.

We are looking for a dynamic and motivated Specialty Doctor in General Surgery to join our friendly and enthusiastic surgery team at the James Paget University Hospital, located on the Norfolk coast within walking distance of long sandy beaches and close to the beautiful Norfolk Broads.

Applications are invited from Doctors who would like to continue their general professional training at the above modern District General Hospital. Applicants should be fully GMC registered with a licence to practice. MRCS or equivalent is essential to this post.

There is an active teaching/research programme within the department and there are links with the University of East Anglia. There is an excellent purpose built training and education centre on site at the James Paget University Hospital along with a newly refurbished library and learning caf area.

The Hospital is based in the coastal town of Gorleston between the resorts of Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft. Other coastal resorts such as Southwold, Caister and Hemsby also lie within the Trust's catchment area along with several broadland villages/towns such as Beccles, Acle and Oulton Broad. A pro-active role should be taken in departmental audits and must participate in the on-going teaching activities of the department. To provide support and guidance to Trainees. To participate actively in the educational and audit activities of the department, for example recruiting patients to new trials and verifying timely data collection.

Develop management skills in running successful MDT sessions.

A flexible attitude to adjusting to changes within the department will be necessary. The appointee will be given the opportunity to receive further training in his/her own special interest.

Person Specification
Education and Qualifications
Essential 

  • MBBS or equivalent
  • MRCS or equivalent recognised by GMC
  • ATLS
  • IELTS etc, level 7.0 overall

Desirable 

  • Higher Degree (MSc, MD)

Experience and Knowledge
Essential 

  • Experience in General Surgery
  • Able to plan and develop the service
  • Willingness to participate in and lead a multi-disciplinary team, balancing departmental and personal objectives
  • Ability to organise and prioritise clinical needs with awareness of own limitations and the ability to know when to consult senior advice.
  • Clinical Knowledge & Expertise: appropriate knowledge base and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems.

Academic Achievements
Essential 

  • Ability to use research outcomes in clinical practice
  • Experience of conducting clinical audit/QI
  • Experience of using evidence base to support decision making

Desirable 

  • Involvement in research projects and published papers
  • Evidence of interest and experience in teaching
