An exciting opportunity has arisen for a substantive consultant psychiatrist to join the team on Willow ward an 11 bedded, female adult acute ward in Oakley Court (Luton). The post holder will provide clinical leadership to the ward based MDT to deliver a range of evidence based and recovery orientated interventions in accordance with NICE guidance, within a frame of trauma informed care.

Willow ward provides inpatient care for patients with a range of mental health conditions including Bipolar Disorder, Schizophrenia and Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder.

The consultant role on Willow Ward makes up and 8PA post, this would be ideal for a consultant looking for a less than full time role. For consultants wishing to work full time,an additional 2 PA can be included in the job plan in an area of the consultant interest. These sessions could be in a variety of exciting settings including developing and established areas such as Personality Disorder Service, Eating disorder Service, and Rehabilitation Service. Alternatively, there may be academic or educational roles available. Please discuss with the Clinical Director to consider options further.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will:

  • Provide Locum consultant leadership to the multidisciplinary ward team
  • Provide comprehensive assessment, diagnosis, treatment and management of the mental and physical health for 11 acutely ill adult female inpatients
  • Carry out all Responsible Clinician's duties for those patients detained under the Mental Health Act 1983, maintaining all care planning in line with legal requirements. These duties will include; assessing patients under the Mental Health Act, capacity assessments, consent to treatment, tribunal report writing, attending Mental Health Act Review Tribunals and Managers' Hearings, granting Sec 17 leave, revoking CTOs, recommending CTOs, etc.
  • Assume clinical responsibility for adult patients with mental illness admitted acutely from community services (All admissions will be gate- kept by the Crisis Resolution/Home Treatment team)
  • Undertake all work in the context of the recovery approach, which is emphasised across the Trust, placing the service user at the centre of care planning and decision making
  • Attend the ward on a daily basis to review patients, enable facilitation of the care program approach and involve carers when appropriate at each stage of the inpatient stay.

QUALIFICATIONS
Essential 

  • Fully registered with the General Medical Council
  • Eligible for inclusion in the GMC Specialist Register (or Specialist Registrar within 6 months of gaining CCT at time of interview).
  • Membership or Fellowship of the Royal College of Psychiatrists or equivalent qualification (in accordance with Royal College of Psychiatrists guidelines)
  • Eligible for Section 12 Approval (Mental Health Act)/ Approved Clinician or willing to apply for such approval once in post.

Desirable 

  • A higher degree such as MD or PhD

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE
Essential 

  • Experience of clinical work in Acute Adult Psychiatry at SpR, SASG or consultant level within the last 3 years
  • Excellent working knowledge and experience of the application of the Mental Health Act
  • Appreciation and understanding of ethnic minority issues and a commitment to developing culturally sensitive practices
  • Understanding of social factors relevant to psychiatry
  • Robust experience of working with severe and enduring mental illness and risk assessment, management
  • Leadership skills

Desirable 

  • Experience of service development and introducing new services in mental health
  • Experience of working at consultant level in an inpatient environment.
  • Formal leadership and management training

ORGANISATIONAL SKILLS/ABILITIES
